People who disrespect the war dead rank just slightly above child molesters, animal abusers and similar degenerates by my book. Knowing how the authorities in the Commonwealth nations are, it's obviously too much to hope that this thing I won't honour with the name of a human being will get a severe beating from the police and face a permanent banishment from the country if nothing more, but I wish for that nonetheless.

I certainly think people who show disrespect to those infinitely better than themselves who had the guts to make the ultimate sacrifice for their countries deserve nothing short of the above treatment.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

Your book is fucked up beyond anything human language could express. In fact, I'm willing to make a metaphorical exception and burn your book.

Pretty sure breaking into a monument and setting fire to things is already outlawed.

^ This. I know some people will say that's extreme. But if you burn our flag.. desecrate our monuments (especially war memorials) then you have no place here.

Flag burning. Worse than murder!

People who died about a hundred years ago would be so upset though! And isn't that who really matters?

By all rights this thread should have been shut down for being one sentence and a link. Given the four pages of discussion, I shall have mercy upon you. Next time you start a thread, try presenting some points for discussion, for instance, what do you think about flag-burning as protected speech (which it is in the US)? Should there be exemptions because this incident also involved (apparent) desecration of a grave? Stuff like that.

Whilst I pretty much agree with you, burning things and leaving them unattended is a bit over the line.

That shit's dangerous, fuck the 'symbolism'. Symbolism changes on a whim.

The vandalism thing?

I meant just in general, playing around with fire. Leave a burning flag unattended on your porch and you're a dick. Leave it on your neighbour's, you're a dick. On a government building, you're a dick. If it's a burning effigy of Osama bin Laden or the scissor sisters or a particularly gaudy impressionist painting, you're still a dick.

Yes, fire hazards are bad. Hardly warrants 100 lashes or a beating and exile or what have you.

In Australia? Well, it's not bushfire season, so she gets a pass, I guess.

EDIT: Oh, Hyde Park in Sydney. Do they even have bush around those parts?

I wouldn't know - this time last year I was cramming for end of year examinations, in Victoria. We have our own fires to deal with.

Admittedly, it does seem our bushfire season is offset compared to NSW's. But I've never been good with dates.

I've never looked into it but it seems Victoria has a season in mid January to early February and NSW has its worst fires before Christmas.

well... i know, freedom of speech and whatnot, but this is a weird way of protesting against something. that is, if she was actually protesting against something.

personally, i think national symbols and memorials are something that should not be messed with; that being the reason why i was upset at many fellow brazilians during the world cup as they yelled "booo" as other nation's national anthem was playing. damn, that's disrespectful.

now, burning a nation's flag in a war memorial, that's really disgusting. i mean, not only she is being disrespectful upon a country and its honour, but she is also being disrespectful at those who have given their lives for their nation and their people. i'm not saying that this person should be exiled or whatsoever, but this happening, and the fact that there are people who dare to make such a disrespectful thing, deeply saddens me.

someone mentioned revoke of citzenship; i completely agree. you dislike the country so much to the point of buring its flag in a war memorial? then what are you doing there in the first place?

you might have noticed i repeated the word "disrespectful" a lot. because that's what it is. disrespectful, outraging and saddening.

So when you mentioned free speech, you only think it's for people who want to say good things about their country. If you have a negative opinion to express about your country, you don't have a right to do so, and will be punished if you do it.

Killing or raping a citizen of a country or while in said country is arguably worse than doing anything to a piece of cloth. It is ridiculous that loss of citizenship is being seriously considered by some people as punishment for this.
