Haven't paid that much attention to it, myself.

That's because in the first one, the top of his head was cut off by the photographer. That can help extend the look of the face/head.
He's definitely either gained weight, or he is retaining A LOT of water.

Not surprising for someone in their sixties, to be honest.

The first one is from "Herr meets hare", the second from the "Russian Rhapsody". Have them on VHS since I was a kid, re-watched like a hundred times.

Eh, what? Most European societies were placed under much worse circumstances between 1939 and 1945 - they didn't just get invaded, they got invaded by genocidal maniacs - and none of them responded by turning to ethnonationalism. On the contrary, they turned to the left. After the aforementioned genocidal maniacs were put in the ground where they belonged, left-wing parties swept into power in France, Italy, the UK, Czechoslovakia, and many other places.

It would be foolish to deny that virtually all of the leftwing resistance movements in occupied Europe had a decidedly patriotic element in them. "German invaders - out of our country!" was the common credo, especially after the Soviet Union got invaded as well and Stalin abolished the Comintern's "Germany taboo". And it's not exactly 1945 - the Russian occupation of Ukrainian soil isn't over, nor will it be anytime soon by the looks of it.
After the war, the Communist Left was popular in countries like Italy and France, yes - but only because Communism in the late 40ies had a completely different Image from what it has now. You will notice that the "orthodox" (aka SU-praising) Left is completely marginalized in Europe these days.
And I don't see why things should be different in Ukraine. The CPU's poor results are their own fault - if they - and other Ukrainian Leftist parties - continue to identify positively with the Soviet Union (mirroring Putin's Russia) and generally behave like a Russian Fifth Column, it is a given that they will alienate the majority of Ukrainians.
