The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today awarded the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020 to Tokyo, which was chosen over fellow Candidate Cities Istanbul and Madrid after two rounds of voting during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.
Tokyo received 60 votes to Istanbul’s 36 in the final round, with Madrid having been eliminated in the first round after losing a tie-breaker with Istanbul. Tokyo, which also bid for the 2016 Olympic Games, previously hosted the Games in 1964.

“Congratulations to the city of Tokyo on its election as host of the 2020 Olympic Games,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge, whose 12-year term in office comes to an end on 10 September. “Tokyo presented a very strong technical bid from the outset – and it needed to in competition with two such high-calibre bids from Istanbul and Madrid. All three cities were capable of staging excellent Games in 2020, but in the end it was Tokyo’s bid that resonated the most with the IOC membership, inviting us to “discover tomorrow” by delivering a well-organised and safe Games that will reinforce the Olympic values while demonstrating the benefits of sport to a new generation.”

The signing of the Host City Contract and press conference with the 2020 host city is scheduled to take place from 18:30 today, local time.

RESULTS:

Round 1
Tokyo: 42
Istanbul: 26
Madrid: 26

Round 1 tie-breaker
Istanbul: 49
Madrid: 45

Round 2
Tokyo: 60
Istanbul: 36

So NS, what say ye about this choice? Personally, I think that since Tokyo has already hosted the games before, while that might mean that they have their shit together to pull off such an expensive feat again, makes the games a bit Stale. I would have preferred Istanbul or Madrid, even Baku as an alternative

That's a long while away and hardly anything worth talking about.

Los Angeles was in the running at one point. That would have been incredibly annoying. I'm glad that Tokyo has to deal with it instead, though as the traffic piles up and the tourists overrun their city, they may start praying for another giant monster attack as a preferable alternative.

This will be a good opprotunity for Japan to retake the world with Imperialism show off their culture.

And Hatsune Miku will be the official mascot. ;)

They're getting enough love from the Armenians in Azerbaidzhan.

On topic, old news.

They host some badass Greco/Freestyle world tournaments though.

No, it doesn't. Azerbaijan needs to work on their serious human rights problems and fixing their authoritarian government before I'd want them to host the Olympics.

Why? Baku seems like a neat city with a bright future, but I wouldn't root for it until Azerbaijan improves their human rights record and government corruption.

I was rooting for it mainly because I wanted to see a smaller nation get to host. It does need to improve but that doesn't mean it should instantly be counted out. Japan is just so, blah.

Because most of the time, people don't even know Azerbaijan exists, and hosting the Olympics would be a great opportunity for them to show the world they do. Not to say Baku is a modern and developed city.

That's a fair point, and I want Azerbaijan to be able to tell the world "Look at us, we're doing well." But, they need to fix a crapton of problems first.

They certainly have priorities, but this doesn't mean they shouldn't host the Olympics.

They have better public transportation systems than we do that's for sure.

Spain can't pay for it and Turkey could be the next playground of ISIS and Japan might blow up in a nuclear firestorm during the next earthquake......what a choice.
