Pretty much this. Plus, it's heavily used here in NSG to stifle opposing views, which I find incredibly abhorrent in a forum that supposedly revolves around free expression of opinions. I share your bafflement on this.

I don't get people insisting on calling people things that they know offend them. If I'm informed that calling someone [slur] offends them, it costs me nothing to avoid using that slur.
