No, because it's gotten to the point where it's fucking ridiculous.

And certain people feel that way about certain language used.
Funny coincidence.

Perhaps you need to grow a thicker skin if you cannot handle be criticized for your own lack of sensitivity or awareness.

There is a difference between complaining and getting offended.

That's what this whole debate is about IMO. Many people simply don't agree with an issue but don't know the difference between disagreement and offence so they say that they have been offended when they haven't.

This is my libertarian viewpoint coming out here, though. The rights of the collective should never outweigh the rights o the individual.

Well, when it's gotten to the point where you need to say "undocumented worker" instead of "illegal immigrant" for fear of offending people I thinks it's gone to far.

But that's none of my business.

Perfect example of the euphemism roundabout.

My opinion is that most people don't seem to really understand what political correctness is. They tend to conflate it with criticism of discriminatory speech, or even with any hint of promotion of social acceptance of minorities, particularly sexual minorities.

I for one wholeheartedly support making needlessly malicious and hurtful expressions socially and culturally unacceptable.

1. See, if I had to summarize either of those two definitions in five words or less, I'd always end up with something similar to "don't be a dick". Those dictionary excerpts are just long winded, sophisticated ways of saying you should be nice to people and respect their feelings. That's all political correctness is, that's all it will ever be about and pretending it's about anything else is just plain dishonest.

2. It's also politically correct to use the word black. Unless a black person says "look, I don't like that word, can you call me this instead?" and then if you decide to be nice and call them something different, you're also being politically correct. Although most people would call that being reasonable.

1. Yes but the technical definition of something doesn't always have to be five words or fewer. I'd never dispute that the intent of political correctness was to both be nice to people and respect their feelings but its wrong to pretend its just that. Political Correctness is a means to create a "nicer" society but it does it through restriction and censorship there becomes an "official" PC language.

2. It is just being reasonable so why have a term politically correct unless of course it means something more than simply "being reasonable".

Look, if you're asking why the term "political correctness" exists in the first place when it could easily be replaced with combinations of several different words, I don't know. But what I do know is what the term actually means and obsessing over why it's called something when it could be called something else is pointless.

Would you address your mother as "Bitch"? If not, why? If not, if you can show respect and slightly inconvenience yourself for you mother, why can't you do the same for most people?

I'm not one of those people who think "illegal immigrant" is offensive. However, "illegal(s)" has become a racially charged attack at Latinos during all this 1 year-long debate spanning multiple networks (NS is not the only network that actually is debating immigration on the net).

It's why in debates I tend to correct people to use "illegal immigrant" if they must use a term that is not "undocumented immigrant".

I think part of the problem is a lot of racists call for an end to political correctness so they are free to abuse people. This causes people to think that PC is the lesser of two evils but people shouldn't live in fear of offending someone, it's becoming a little excessive in recent years IMO.

I can live with that. But there are people who would go so far as I go want to eliminate the term "illegal immigrant".

Tomorrow murder could stop being illegal. Am I going to murder people? No.
