I still have never been thoroughly convinced that politically correct is even an actual thing aside from a buzzword thrown around by people as a way to disparage a group of usually innocious behaviors they don't approve of for whatever reason - those things that fall into PC are widly variant from one individual to the next.

Some political correctness is needed, but the lefties are finding new ways to take it too far

"The lefties." Gee, I didn't know I did that. It's lucky for you that all generalizations are all correct.

The only people I ever hear use it are those who have just finished complaining about other people not liking what they've said.

Not all lefties push it, but PC is most certainly not a right-wing phenomenom. I'm not sure what freedom fries were supposed to be, but that's not really political correctness.

The right wing is the only group of people I ever hear banging on about it.

As in, taking issue with it? Seeing as the left (in general) wants, if anything, more and more PC; you're correct.

The opposition to nearly anything is going to be louder than the support. Unions are louder than employers. The peacenicks were louder than the warhawks during Vietnam. Etc, etc.

There is no "support" for PC. Anyone with a brain calls it being polite and being reasonable. The only people who ever talk about the term PC are people who want to say racist/sexist/bigoted shit and then not be called out for it.

Ah, good to know you consider 'reliable' and 'hardworking' bigoted terms.

Not to mention Easter, brainstorming, teaching colors in a Spanish class, manholes...

Do you really think the collective left liberal hivemind new world order socialism international conspiracy sat around and stroked our cocks at the thought of reliable and hardworking being considered "bigoted terms" by some random individuals who decided that they, themselves didn't like the terms?

If I ask you to stop calling me Australian, does that mean the uber nazi PC police has struck again?

Oh, PC was championed by jingoists back in WWI.

Liberty Cabbage was sauerkraut, German shepherds became Alsatians, bratwurst and frankfurters became Liberty dogs, hamburgers became liberty steak, and German measles became, laughably, Liberty measles.

PC is pushed by everyone, for different reasons. Conservatives push for. "Pro family" instead of "anti homosexual", "homicide bombing" instead of suicide bombing, "enhanced interrogation methods", "Death tax" for the estate tax, "Pro life" instead of "anti-abortion", and "Right to work" laws being anti-union.

I never said political correctness was a vast conspiracy. But that doesn't make it any less idiotic and unnecessary.

What's idiotic and unnecessary is your butthurt about some random employment office excluding two words from their job advert.

So your opinion is that it's not a big enough deal to matter, and to just ignore the foibles of political correctness. Somebody might get fired here, another person won't get hired, some taxpayer money gets spent on changing signs, some people get angry threats on the internet. Not big enough to matter, as you say.

Then why do you think it is the job of the government and businesses to protect the feelings of some oversensitive people?

Uh-huh

Then why do you think it is the job of the government and businesses to protect the feelings of some oversensitive people?

Did the government actually do that in this case or was it some Jobcentre Plus branch managed by community individuals? Because I think I know the answer, and it's not the government.

What about the UK city council that banned the use of 'brainstorm' because it insults epileptics?
Or the US school district that fired a Spanish teacher for using the word 'negro' when teaching the colors?

Government or not, no one should feel forced to do this.

Did the whole of the US and UK respectively ban these words? No... ?

Government or not, no one should feel forced to do this.

And nobody is.

That Spanish teacher was fired because of doing her job - that forces other treachers to be PC or suffer similar consequences. The employees of that UK city are forced to refrain from using brainstorm in documents, emails, and discussions. Those who want to advertise for jobs with that government organized employment agency are forced to refrain from using innocent terms like hardworking and reliable. Are they all nobodies?

What do you call political correctness, if not overt societal pressure to use a set of terminology deemed by some to be more polite? That societal pressure now comes with consequences if not adhered to.

IMHO political correctness is one of the most insidious, pernicious and unfair form of censorship.

There's one thing between being an idiot and being politically correct.

Your example with the Spanish teacher is a stupid reason to fire a teacher. That isn't political correctness, is being an idiot, and anyone who is bilingual knows it.

Ah, but you admit that it can be that, if not always. Isn't the fact that it can be like that enough to at least reduce its (over)reach.

Well, if you are arguing about its overreach into idiotic things then yes, I agree with you. Sometimes it gets to be a bit too much and I feel is because certain people do not understand the concept behind it and just use it as a buzzword for anything they don't like.

If you are arguing for eliminating the concept of not being an asshole altogether from society that's where we don't agree.

The first, though I imagine that my definition of idiotic may be broader than yours in this case. I don't like when people are impolite or purposefully cruel in their choice of words, but what is considered offensive has grown overwhelmingly, and many organizations (schools, and government agencies especially) have overstepped their authority beyond resonable methods of ensuring equity.
