More than 80 tanks were so badly damaged (IE destroyed) that they had to be shipped back to the US. Insurgents have actually done more damage then the Iraqi military ever did, lol.
I read an article somewhere about an American officer who spent time as the foreign guest of several Arabian armies, mainly the Egyptian and a few others. His position was basically that Arabs do badly in the construct of the modern army, but much better when they fight as smaller, decentralized, irregular forces. Here's the link to that below:

Anyway, regarding justification for an insurgency, I agree with NFP. It's all a question of degree. How repressive is the government? What are the goals of the insurgents? Usually, it just gets into lesser evil/greater evil territory, pretty much like any war ever.
