We've given millions of pounds in aid to these former "colonies" and you know what? It's a complete waste of fucking money, because the natives can't seem to run their own fucking country in a civilized manner. We may have colonized them but we're repaying them for it.

Yes, it's the 'uncivilized barbarian heathen's' faults that their historic able-bodied male population was shipped away, that their resources were extracted en masse, that their culture was repressed leading to social inequality, that they have no educational institutions or public infrastructure and that the rest of the world frankly doesn't care due to massive media bias. A revolt in Ukraine occurs, the world goes wild. 100,000 dead in Darfur, a footnote on CNN for a couple days.
These 'natives' weren't exactly given the best role model considering the existing hierarchy was torn down, and then the nations were literally drawn lines through in meetings on a different continent, then mass-withdrawal leading to the rise of warlords and dictators.
You can't repay a nation for taking away their history, the best thing the world can do to help developing nations is economic growth and infrastructure improvement along with education. That, is how the colonial powers can help, not mindlessly shipping millions of pounds away and hoping it won't fall into the wrong hands, because it does, often.

No, it is not. I have heard stories that this mentality is supposedly on a high level there. I think some years ago there was a case when the school administration suspended a little girl because it did not want to.play with some Pakistani kids.

They're only like that when it comes to the present. Everything prior to 1945 was acceptable and glorious.

Actually the main reason why some British posters claim that the Empire was bad is slavery, colonialism and that "woman had their place in society".
Also, reasons steming from pre-WW2 period.
People who glorify the Empire are called "little Englanders" (a term that I noticed on this forum). That the politicans like the LibDem openly said they dislike the Empire and there is even this thread about RAF banning this images from planes.
But maybe I.got a false impression.

That's all quite true. Slavery, colonialism, and "women knowing their place" is all garbage that the human race has made great strides toward growing beyond.
What is exactly is wrong with modern British politicians disliking the Empire? In the end, it was a money pit, based on exploitation of other people's resources and cracking skulls. Not activities for a modern democracy to be engaging in.

Its too bad the Empire did not last; the world became fractured once more and many former colonies have since had much political and economic turmoil.

Yeah that would never happen. By their climax they were already seeing internal strife, India never would've held together forever, they are united by the British sure, but it wasn't all positive. The French and Spanish would never simply submit, China would take decades to conquer, Russia is a behemoth, and as technology modernized defensive weaponry became key. A united human race wouldn't happen, and one under an English monarch? Doubt it.

http://yougov.co.uk/news/2014/07/26/bri ... ts20140727By three to one, British people think the British Empire is something to be proud of rather than ashamed of – they also tend to think it left its colonies better off, and a third would like it to still exist
Britain has long found it difficult to evaluate its former empire. Imperial nostalgia on television has been shamed by historians, and modern prime ministers have expressed ‘deep sorrow’ for Britain’s role in slavery – but they have also called on British people to celebrate the legacy of the Empire.
Among the British public, feelings tend to be positive. A new YouGov survey finds that most think the British Empire is more something to be proud of (59%) rather than ashamed of (19%). 23% don't know. Young people are least likely to feel pride over shame when it comes to the Empire, though about half (48%) of 18-24 year olds do. In comparison, about two-thirds (65%) of over 60s feel mostly proud.
Economically, the British Empire invested in infrastructure, established trading routes and installed institutions – but it also extracted resources, oversaw famines and in some cases left behind instability. Though many (36%) are unsure, British people do tend to think that, overall, former British colonies are now better off for having been part of the empire, by 49-15%.
A third of British people (34%) also say they would like it if Britain still had an empire. Under half (45%) say they would not like the Empire to exist today. 20% don’t know.
The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year are the latest reminder of the British Empire, and of a determination to present its legacy as constructive. YouGov also asked which countries British people would especially like to do well at the events, with Australia, New Zealand and Canada being most favoured.
Do you think they're right to be proud of it?
I am proud of all the good we brought to the world and it's hard not to feel pride in a nation having that kind of unbroken record for empire size. There have been some negatives but ultimately this all boils down to "well what did theRomansBritish ever do for us?"

The joke was, he's easily one of the most famous people to have called for a "New world order" under the British Empire, Of course he was mostly talking about the non white world but you know, that was pretty much the attitude of the time. Rhodesia was named after him as a bit of random trivia.

Yes, because widow burning was such a good thing.
