2014 Commonwealth Games

Postby The Derpy Democratic Republic Of Herp » Wed Jul 23, 2014 9:07 am

It's the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games!

I don't think theres a thread for this yet so I decided to make one.

So who are your rooting for? (I'm rooting for Canada because I'm Canadian)

I'm a Scottish person and I find these games to be a complete waste of money and time. I'm not rooting for anyone and the money spent on this pointless event should have been used for something useful.

If it's the Commonwealth games then why doesn't the Queen race against her various governors? I'd watch that!

It's going to be shite.

The Commonwealth Games are just a pathetic way of trying to replicate the Olympics on a much smaller scale.

Not really, the world will always be depressing and fully of sad things, and replicating the already shitty Olympic games on a shittier smaller scale will not change that or divert attention from that.

That's a pretty shitty reason to say it's going to be bad.
Pretty much like saying your back yard pool is going to be crappy because it's not as big as an olympic swimming pool.

Little is spent on these games relative to the combined owning of the commonwealth, don't get your knickers in a twist.

I'm not broadcasting my back garden pool on TV and making a massive deal about it.

As a Scot I'm happy for the event to happen, its a much better use of funds than the pointlessness of pursuing nationalism and independence, and might do something to reverse the "sick man of Europe" tagline we are now known for.
Although I must admit I'm a bit jealous of the weather back home, as I happen to be sat enduring a bloody cold winter in the Kalahari...

But that only affects one country. These games affect 71 countries and the over two billion people in them.

I much prefer the Commonwealth games to the hyperbole of the Olympics, they are a much gentler more civil affair which allows the colonies to celebrate the glories of Brittania.
Great for Scotland,
Great for the EmpireCommon wealth,
Great for the Antipodes (just watch out for those Ozzies)
