I don't really know why we gave the first one the name "Cold War", since it's a pretty normal thing in international relations for the proportionate powers to rival each other.

The Cold War never ended, at least according to the defense industry and policy makers on both sides.

The US and Russia got so used to being on opposite sides that even after the USSR fell there was still too much bad blood between the policy makers. And in order to keep the military industry going, both sides had to convince the policy makers that the other nation was a large threat in order to continue the research and production of weapons.

About the only way for the cold war to have truly ended was for the people who grew up during the cold war to fall out of power before a situation could start it up again.

That failed.

Yes, it did. Unfortunately the West used the opportunity to allienate with Russia instead of making cooperation with it.

Also the West to doubt in this belief of representative democracy.

How exactly could 'the west' ally with Russia that would be good for everyone?

I'm honestly not sure there was a first Cold War; the more I look at it, the more it just looks like international relations as usual. Comparable powers have rivalries with each other, and do things to fuck each other up because of it. The only thing that really makes it stand out was that it was the first time that direct confrontation wasn't really an option.

The cold war ended in 1991, but the attitudes it created have persisted ever since. Its the reason why the east and west still bear their teeth at each other, only now neither side can afford to get their teeth cleaned

Yes, which is why it was considered a Cold War, rather than the Great Game, or the French-German enmity, both of which came to blows. The fact that both sides were unwilling to fight directly yet spent all their time and most of their defense budgets preparing to do so.

For example with abandoming the NATO as Russia did with the Varshaw pact. It made seen to some parts of the world that the Cold war mentality the West has never abandomed.

Also in the early 2000s the West started to doubt on its believ in representative democracy and in the EU in multiculturalism. As the case of Iraq shows representative democracy was a bad idea so the response of the West to expand even more just to proove itself that it still works (also the staged coup in Ukraine is the most recent case)

Generally ally nations don't try and provoke each other into economic war

It didn't end in 1991. We came the closest to war with the Russians since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1999, when Wesley Clark actually ordered NATO forces to open fire on the Russians landing at Pristina International Airport in Kosovo.

Why would the US and everyone else abandon NATO? We're all still allies.

Geoeconomics tell me no. Russia relies too much from China from now on, and China as a capitalist utopia doesn't need economic sanctions on their portfolio. I honestly don't get this Russia-Ukraine tension. if the Russians wanted Crimea so badly, they should've exerced their influene in order to get a referendum (a legitimate one). they'd win anyways. I think the whole Crimea case was handled terribly by the Kremlin but I support Crimea being russian territory nonetheless.

Depends.

Are you talking about a Cold War that would be at it's height like in the 1960's? Hell no.

Could it be a smaller, dying down Cold War like it was in then 80's? Possibly, and not that unlikely.
