Don't Have Sex Because You Will Get Pregnant...And Die

Postby Basseemia » Tue Jul 15, 2014 6:18 pm

In the 2004 movie Mean Girls, one of the characters Coach Carr is a health teacher. He tells the students during the sex education unit "Don't have sex or you will get pregnant...and die". It has become a lot less common but it still happens, abstinence being taught in school. Does NSG think this should stop, continue, or even become more popular in the public schooling system.

Should abstinence be taught in sex education over ways of contraception in public schools? Should a sex education class be mandatory in schools? If so, at what age/grade?

Personally, I believe it should not be taught in schools at all. Safe sex needs to be taught in mandatory sex education classes in the 8th grade.

Teach safe sex and make it mandatory. As for the grade well we started sex ed at grade 5.. But I think that was more for understanding and getting used to everything first. Safe sex practices started in around grade 7 or 8. So 14-15.

Don't teach sex ed in schools at all, leave it to the parents to educate them the way their moral code teaches.

There is a lot of evidence which suggests that abstinence-only sex education doesn't work. Additionally, focus on abstinence is oftentimes done with the thinly veiled intent of reinforcing the idea that there is something morally degenerate about sexuality, which is quite frankly moronic and not something we should promote.

Sexual education should be reserved for 13+ students, and sex between anyone under the age of 18, consensual or not, should be illegal.

Preaching abstinence doesn't work forever.

Teach the children how to have safe sex, however tell them that even then there is a tiny chance of getting pregnant, and still getting STD's. In addition, promote abstinence as the "best way to go" however if children want to make the choice of having sex, still teach them about safe sex and supply free contraceptives.

Dare I ask, why?

I'm always annoyed with people shouting "Abstinacne or u will die frm sex!!!" However, I think it's reasonable to warn people of the dangers and explain methods to prevent it. Either that, or castrate everyone. :p Not a bad idea, actually.

Tiny chance? It's more than tiny. If one has unprotected sex at 16 for a year assuming sex once a week, there's almost a guarantee of pregnancy.

Parents won't be any better. Especially if all they preach is abstinence, and if they fill child's mind with bullshit.

Only in so far as that there are schools without comprehensive sexual education programs
