Indeed. People were jailed for atheism before Darwin was even born. I know this because of the adventures of Casanova, who was thrown into a Venetian prison cell for this very 'crime'. He escaped, though. After that he did what he did best, with the willing support of many lovers.

The most underdeveloped nations tend to have the most religious populations and vice versa. There are some exceptions to this trend. Probably the most well-known (and most oft-discussed) outlier would be the US, in which 2/3 of Americans considered religion important to their lives as opposed to about 4/10 as the median of 27 developed countries. If the trends continue as they have been, more and more developing countries will become industrialised and with them more non-religious people.
