I didn't care for that one. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood when I watched it. I dunno...

Not that people from Maine always speak good English... Most of them do, but when you find one that does have a thick local accent, it doesn't sound pretty.
You must hate Stephen King then.

Not as good as Gettysburg, despite the much larger budget. Didn't seem nearly as cohesive; Gettysburg worked as a single movie despite being originally filmed for a miniseries, but it felt like G&G really would have worked better as a miniseries.

But I wish Gettysburg had more blood and gore...
Oh well.

Unfortunately, the first images conjured in my mind when seeing the Battle Flag are pictures of bigoted ghouls dressed up in sheets and burning crucifixes outside people's homes. I see lynchings, reactionary thought and anti-intellectualism.
A ways down after that, I see cool 80's metal bands (like Pantera and Iron Maiden) wearing it as a symbol of rock & roll, which is what sparked my love for the flag I think.

That's not the stars and bars.
This is.
This was the first national flag of the CSA.
You must remember that the KKK uses the US flag too not just the confederate battle flag.

As long as I don't have to actually listen to them, it's fine. It just is painful to listen to if I have to hear someone from Maine trying to talk when they don't speak proper English. I know some people from outside New England have the same reaction to Massachusetts accents, so I guess now I know how they feel.

It did fine without it. We can't have that scene in the background at the end of the second day in every scene. You know, the one outside the Confederate field hospital where the surgeon dumps a bucket into the wagon?

Oh ho, it's just as painful to read.

Ahh. My mistake. Thanks for the correction!
I suppose they do use the US flag in rallies too, but I think because that flag represents so much more in the Zeitgeist, both positive and negative, it doesn't have the same intrinsic psychological ties to racism that the Battle Flag has. It isn't really used for much other than typically negative ideas/movements. The Confederacy fought to keep slavery (among other things). Even if that was for purely economic reasons and had nothing to do with race supremacy or the likes. It still supported a very shitty social system. The Battle Flag hasn't had much more exposure in the way of representing stately offices beyond taking up a small portion of State flags but even they are simply seen as relics of an age that should be grown out of and shelved.
What else is the Battle Flag used for in pop culture? Bad country music, Southern divisiveness, the redneck Starsky & Hutch TV show. The Battle Flag just hasn't had a lot of positive press and that's bound to affect how society at large is going to react to it.
