About Heysel I still think that the cause of the disaster was the lack of fighting spirit among the Juve fans closest to Liverpool's section. I'm not trying to be "vile" here but that simply was the cause.

I wouldn't question that there are fans in South America who can create an atmosphere and some of them can be quite fierce when defending their clubs and their manors. Brazilians and Argentinians are probably stronger than Italian ultras in general.

However I think that the English style of chants tend to be more fitting in the moments in which they are sung. It's more of a natural part of the roaring crowds than a choreo with accessories such as drums, megaphones or even mics and speakers. I don't think a proper football crowd should require group organisation with apointed leaders. Fanaticism should be as spontane as possible and come from each individual supporter independantly of what a "capo" says or does.

I noticed that Celtic were included and they are famous for their support but it should be said that Green Brigade have a very small part of that. I've been to Celtic Park myself as an away supporter and it really doesn't take much to make yourself heard during the periods when only their ultras are active. It's a completely different story once the singing spreads to the rest of the stadium and the times when that happens it tends to be more related to moments in the actual football game.
However, I'm not protesting against any "sectarianism" or violence which might be more likely to occur with Green Brigade involved than how likely it is to happen with your average Celtic fan. Styles of support shouldn't be mixed up with the level of commitment and I want that level to be very high.

I understand why it's perhaps necessary to assign blame, but when people talk about tragedies like Heysel, it sometimes feels like they're forgetting that there were several factors that led to this tragedy, and that blame cannot be so easily assigned.

In my view, poor stadium upkeep, illogical ticket allocation, inadequate policing, and crowd behaviour all contributed to the events at Heysel. The incident as a whole should be examined, and the causes addressed (and I think they have been). Assigning blame in and of itself doesn't prevent another tragedy from happening, and frankly, that's all that matters to me, as a football fan and as a human being.

That's the main reason it's so important we remember, IMO.

RIP to the 39. No one should attend a football match and not come home.

Yes.

Although they’re politically part of the Netherlands, I don’t expect any clubs from there to join the Dutch league system anytime soon, so I would hope a more practical solution will eventually be allowed.

Oh, there is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonaire_na ... tball_team , member of the CONCACAF, just not of FIFA.

And, this is my guess, they have their own leagues. Or something shared among them. Bonaire has at least their own league ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonaire_League ). And until 2010 there was a Netherlands Antilles League above it, to decide on an overall championship (actually between Curacao and Bonaire as far as I can tell.

Funny how some status within a country* influences something as trivial** as a couple of football matches.

*country used here very loosely

** well, not that trivial, football and other sports is how I earn money currently :p

So I figure here's a place for this info: Football Manager stuffs. My team. St Albans, in the Conference South.

Game 1: My reserve squad, we drew with 1-1
Game 2: Workington or something, friendly, lost 1-0
Game 3: Northhampton, a team we should have lost to, friendly, 3-2.

Quite a while til season starts, but it should be good.

To be fair I think by and large if you have a question about FM/FIFA (e.g. who to sign, etc) we're more than happy to help in this thread, but this isn't really the place for telling us how you're doing.

Could start a thread in A&F. I would join, I have FM 13 and my Barca team is epic.

Probably why...

We did our mighty best last time to lose it against Hull. Wonder if we can go one further this year and fluff it completely.

Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4–0: there will be a parade in Islington tomorrow, and Southampton is going to Europe. :)

Nah, it's Newcastle's season next year.

To either get relegated or win a cup (or even both), that is.
