That's actually a bit of a fallacy. Pigs aren't naturally filthy creatures. It's how many of them are kept that ends up being a problem. There are a lot of animals who use mud to keep flies and other pests off, as well as protect them from the sun. When pigs are kept in conditions that are one big muddy shitty mess, well, yeah. Pigs are gonna get muddy and shitty. It isn't like the meat itself is shit on account. We still shake hands even though we're aware everyone wipes their asses, neh? One simply hopes the person on the other end washed after.

I love pork. I was playing into the old barnyard stereotype. Obviously there isn't much mud in a modern hog barn, and the shit is generally pumped in lagoons because otherwise the ammonia from their waste can be hazardous in a confined area like that.

You should see the laws they have in place for all of that. I know they do for the chicken industry too, especially with how it can negatively affect the health of the animals. And the waste runoff etc - that's heavily monitored by the EPA, iirc - water quality, the works.

Mmm. Bacon. *blinks* Right then. Yes. I made this lovely pork roast, studded with cloves, done up with a nice white wine sauce and almonds that came out so tender ... om nom nom. Put it out for a medieval feast, even. Cooked it up several times after. Was always a huge hit.

Local-ish feud out in this area recently on whether or not a family ought to be able to expand their hog operation against the wishes of their neighbors. That's a hard one to call, all things considered - opposing 'rights', valid points on both sides of it.

And of course if you get into the rendering plants and meat-packing places ... oi ye gods, grew up with one of those. I have no idea how the town it was in lived with it. On a 'good' day, we'd catch that even over on the practice field, and I'd be all @_@ 'cannae breathe, toxic fumes ... overwhelming ...'

It's the price we pay for large-scale production, unfortunately. I guess it's why I prefer smaller scale bits, and personal farms where the animals are more or less used for the family and small local bits. Not really plausible in today's world, with the setups we have, and the size of our cities. Unless all the city folk want to go vegan and leave the meat to us countryfied peeps.

I think what would be nice if someone want to expand their farm, obviously they have to pay for it, or if someone in the area gets evidence that they are violating health laws or something of the sort, their purchase can be denied, or even that farm size reduced.

Rendering and packing plants are how Sioux City got its nickname, Sewer City. And yeah, when the wind is strong and from the wrong direction, you can smell a hog barn or a dairy for miles downwind, but like they say back home, it smells like money.

Afraid I've only been out that way once - and our car broke down, and we spent most of the time in a dealership before driving all night to get to Rapid City, so ... not so much. Ugh. There's a cattle ranch we drive past on I-80 however on the way to northern Utah every summer that is a killer. You know it's coming, you hold your breath and turn off the AC, and hope you get past the worst of it before you're forced to breathe again. *shudders* For someone who grew up around farms, you'd think I'd be less sensitive to it, but alas, no. Our farms never smelled quite that um ... fragrant.
