Does Extraterrestrial Life Exist?

Postby Hakio » Sat Apr 12, 2014 3:40 pm

Here we will have a debate and discussion on the possible existence of extraterrestrial life, or life beyond our planet. I personally, believe that since our planet is just a speck in a vast universe that life rising out of the primordial muck wasn't a geocentric phenomena to only occur on our planet. But, then again, there will be those who disagree with me and say that there is not any extraterrestrial life beyond our planet, and still others will remain neutral and confide in not knowing. So, I pose this question to you my dear forum followers, from tin foil hat wearers to dreamers to pessimistic skeptics:

Does extraterrestrial life exist?

It's nearly impossible that there isn't life of any complexity other than us in the universe.

Their technology level, their intelligence, their advancement, etc. is what's interesting to think about.

I think that there is most likely extraterrestrial life. While it will be uncommon in comparison to, overall, how many planets there are in the universe, life existing on planets similar to ours would not uncommon in my opinion. What may be the real rarity however is intelligent life.

I think, considering the sheer size of the universe, it's still likely that there's intelligent life other than us somewhere. Likely way out of our scope or theirs.

99.999999% likeliness it does... I'll say "most likely" just because we haven't found it yet.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't extraterrestrial life out there somewhere. After all, it's a great big universe.

There must be life in other planets in the universe; going by pure numbers.
Lets make the assumption that one in a trillion stars are like our sun (this isn't true but I am too lazy to go out and search for exact figure and I am fairly confident that this figure if someone searches up will be significantly more than one in trillion).
20% of sun-like-stars have habitable planets (habitable for life like it exists on earth).
IAU believes there to be 70 x 10^21 stars in observable universe alone.
That gives us 14,000,000,000 habitable worlds by highly conservative estimates. Lets assume life can evolve in one in a billion of those worlds. That gives us 14 words with life similar to that of earth in universe; ie. 13 extraterrestrial life similar to that of earth. Of course probability of finding that life is low due to same reason why extraterrestrial life must exist; Fermi's paradox.

So, if Hollywood makes a movie about a graviton particle before it's discovered it discredits the theory of a graviton particle?

The "aliens" in books and movies are certainly fictional and overblown for commercial purposes, but it's silly to say that extraterrestrial life cannot exist anywhere.

I've looked into it a lot, and I've come to a conclusion: if there is intelligent life out there, they are not good.

I do, however, believe that there are animals and "non intelligent" life out there, though. Like underwater environments still undiscovered.

For instance, entire lakes have been found under the ice in Antarctica. The old continent is being dug up from before it froze. Turns out that permafrost is not actually permanent, as they were able to revive moss that had been frozen under the ice for thousands of years. They are attempting to gather sample of the lake water currently, to determine if small microbes still live in them.

It is incredibly likely that, somewhere in the universe, life exists on other planets besides our own. Some of those lifeforms might be vastly genetically/technologically superior to us and many more are likely to be something you'd keep in a petri dish.

I very much doubt, however, that aliens have ever visited our planet. Certainly not in the time that humans have been aware of the existence of the wider cosmos. Why would they travel (at minimum) several light years simply to put stuff up hicks' bottoms and fondle livestock?

Yeah, they totally prodded me in the bum yesterday.

No, really, anyway. The likelihood of other life being out there somewhere is near definite. But sentient, intelligent, space-faring life would be an extreme rarity.

Why would you think that the intelligent life would be worse than intelligent life here?

Why?
Universe has been around for almost fourteen billion years, earth has been around for around 5 billion years. If an intelligent life managed to develop here in this comparatively small amount of time, it stands to reason that similarly intelligent and more intelligent life must be out there in quite an amount.

I feel that there may be another evolved life form on another planet. There could be a life form which is more evolved than we are in biological traits and abilities and possibly technologies.

Yes. Unquestionably. Hell, we've even created some of it when we launched crap into space that contained various microbes. We may very well be at the beginning of a new wave of panspermia that we caused. Isn't that neat?
