Moldova has been Romania's main ambition for quite a while now. And in all honesty this is justified. In pre-Soviet times there was quite a strong and widespread sentiment of unitary national Romanian identity shared by Transylvanians, Moldovans and Wallachians alike. During the reign of the USSR, as with many of its neighbors, Moldova faced serious denationalization and Russification policies. Even the alphabet was reverted back to Cyrillic, which had been long abandoned in favor of Latin letters . Instead of choosing to fully assimilate Moldova, the Soviets went the middle route of classic divide and conquer, and successfully set up a separate national identity of Moldovans specifically targeted against the Romanian one in order to replace it. With such bullshit as Moldovans having more in common with Slavs than with Romanians (as if they were a different nationality) , and so on. Russophilic academia has even gone to such lengths as creating a "Moldavian-Romanian" dictionary as if the two were different languages when Moldavian is but a mere dialect of Romanian.

However, slowly but surely, Moldovans are waking up from this smoke and mirrors.

In any case, any eventual unification of the two will only come as a result of a democratic decision mutually agreed upon by the two populations. The same could be said about territories currently in Ukraine assuming this would be plausible, which it really isn't. But under no circumstances would Romania wait for e.g. Ukraine to break up in order to come in and annex its territories , or whatever is being implied by those saying that "Romania has territorial claims in Ukraine and Moldova"

EDIT: Correction, they didn't even revert back to the original Cyrillic Romanian alphabet , instead they used a "designed" (read: made-up) Russian-based alphabet. You can read all about it here.

I've never heard of that, sounds almost exactly the Russian policy of liberally spreading those passports around in the post-Soviet republics.

http://www.kyivpost.com/content/ukraine ... ivtsi.html

“For us, it is not important who asks for citizenship,” said Cruceru. “The [Romanian] law is for everybody.”

He said Romanian law grants citizenship to former Romanian citizens who have been deprived of their citizenship for various reasons. He said those also include citizens of other countries who do not intend to move to Romania for permanent residence.

Yep, exactly like the Russian passport policy. :p

My opinion on the whole Moldova/Romania/Transnistria issue: Union with Moldova is somewhat popular in Romania from the polls I've read, while it is supported by only a minority in Moldova. I wouldn't mind the two coming back together, but only if it was on a fully voluntary basis, with both governments agreeing to it, and an honest referendum being held on it. If Moldova doesn't want it, they shouldn't be forced to accept it. I don't really care if Transnistria gets left out. The concept of Transnistria as being part of Moldova was mostly invented by the Soviets as part of an attempt to reinforce their claims to Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. Geopolitics is to blame for this (as usual). They wanted Bessarabia to gain some space to protect Odessa, and to gain control of the mouth of the Danube.

Perhaps Transnistria can be part of some autonomous zone in a federalized Ukraine. I'm not sure how union with Russia would really work, they don't want to give up their presence there, yet they still want to use it as leverage against Moldova. They would much rather have it exist as a quasi-independent state (recognized by no one, yet tacitly supported by them), or in a federal arrangement with Moldova (the more dysfunctional the better, since it would give them more leverage over Moldova), instead of becoming a fully fledged part of the Russian Federation. Maybe in this hypothetical scenario (Moldova and Romania uniting peacefully), they would go ahead and try to annex Transnistria. I don't know.

Bunjak and Northern Bukovina should remain part of Ukraine in any case. All the countries involved should try to ameliorate the human rights and security situation surrounding Transnistria (which all mainly stem from the power organized crime has in the region)

As much I prefer that Moldova be part of the EU (even more to be part of Romania where it is actually belong), we have to face the reality. If Moldova would start to unite with EU or Romania, it will become another Ukrainian case, this time Transistria playing Crimea. The EU should make a plan before it start doing that and even should be willing to spend more money.

Also, the Russian army could easily go in there, as according to a peace accord (between Moldova, Transistria and Russia) Russia has troops in Trandnepar working as peacekeepers.

Solution: hold a democratic referendum, region by region, with six months for campaigning in advance, with debates reserved and thousands of election monitors, in all of Moldova on the issues of:

1. Do you want to join Romania?
2. Do you want the status quo?
3. Do you want to join Russia?

Transdniestr (the USSR Nostalgics' Republic of, ) and Russia both need to fuck off. Ukraine is forever lost now , what does Russia think it'll do? Roll through Kiev to reach Moldova? Yeah , right.

Pay Odessa for passage, much like Lithuania gets paid for passage to Kaliningrad. It's not unheard of for cargo trucks to move through several countries.

Ostrovsky got rooftop coverage in Donetsk, so it's not like they were hostile to him right off the bat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wetleAB1XmY

I think it's more of local idiocy, either that or the locals were pissed off and took it out on Ostrovsky. Obviously they're wrong.

Not on NSG.

People in the comment section he's talking about. Saying he's a fascist propagandist, affiliated with the Right Sector, Western provocateur and so on, and so that justifies the kidnapping.

It's pathetic. Pretty much anyone or anything that goes against their personal opinion is "fascist". It's like reading the writings of a bunch of tumbler feminists. Perhaps we shouldn't even bring up those comments, since I'm sure you can point at idiots everywhere and bring their discussion up here.

Solution: hold a democratic referendum, region by region, with six months for campaigning in advance, with debates reserved and thousands of election monitors, in all of Moldova on the issues of:

1. Do you want to join Romania?
2. Do you want the status quo?
3. Do you want to join Russia?
4. Do you want independence for your region?

Regarding comments, like you said, idiots abound. However, this is the first comment I see: Обвинять журналиста в том, что он информатор всё равно что обвинять уборщицу в том, что она забирает мусор. Правый сектор наверняка и НТВ посматривает. Так-что все журналисты НТВ - информаторы правого сектора. В колонну по одному и сдаваться Пономарёву, and I agree with it.

Wait, Moldova you can't do that! Don't leave us!"

If that happened (not that it will, most likely Moldova will just seek EU membership at some point), and they complained, they can go pound sand for all I care.

Transinistria or whatever the fuck it's called, can't be part of Russia, no matter how much they want it. Russia doesn't have any links to it over land or even through the sea, unlike with Kaliningrad. It's better off being either what it is now or being an autonomous republic under Moldovan protection/semi-administration.

Oh, and Moldova joining the EU is a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time down the track.
