Was amused by the initial responses to the other thread's poll - 40% of respondents believing Crimea will remain part of Ukraine? Who seriously believes the vote will go against Russia, and who seriously thinks Russia wouldn't take the opportunity to incorporate the territory?

good question, considering that everything in the U.N is going to hell in a handbasket, and the international community basically told the Russian Federation, via their U.N Ambassador, to go f themselves, because after Russia vetoed a bill before the U.N Security Council to collectively decide to not recognize the Crimean Refferendum vote, the American Ambassador, the Rwandan Ambassador, the English Ambassador and the French Ambassador all told Russia, in essence, f you and your veto were not going to recognize your refferendum anyway...

Why aren't the Tatars/Ukranians in Crimea voting?
Couldn't they get their own way by voting NO or would the Russian soldiers kill anyone who votes No if No got a majority. (Which could actually happen). Putin would probably go up in smoke if he lost that vote he would be slapping him self like :palm: .

By participating in the vote, they would recognize its legitimacy.

A no would never happen, because a majority of the people in Crimea want to be in Russia, and if they do somehow, vote no, it wouldnt matter because the international community already vowed not to recognize the results, and Putin would just annex it anyway, so, conclusion: we are at war either way....

Even if by some miracle the Crimean "government" and their totally-not-Russian "self defense forces" somehow fail to ensure that 120% of Crimeans vote to return to Russia, it won't matter. Putin will move ahead regardless while piously wailing about how the Russians in Crimea are in danger and he needs to save them even from themselves.

I suppose it's possible that they'll try to give it some veneer of legitimacy by going with the, "We're totally independent, it's just pure coincidence that our entire government, economic and diplomatic policy is dictated by Moscow." route a la Abkhazia/South Ossetia.

the ballots don't have a no box
there's only a yes box
not marking the ballot might be interpreted as no

If they really wanted to piss off Putin/Russia, the Tatars would tear up their ballots right as they are handed to them.

I'd like a time machine to go back to 2008 to all the geniuses who cheerleaded Kosovo's independence in the apparent belief that it would never ever backfire and that the large numbers of ethnic Russians in several former Soviet states could certainly never be of any use to Russia.

As a geographical entity, it will still exist.

Yes, because Putin will destroy a parcel of land that he already has a firm hold on, just because part of the population dislikes him and Russia. That makes perfect sense.

Nor was it "wiped off the face of the earth".

And some people do visit Pripyat. It's a thing you can pay money to do.

A lot of it isn't even that radioactive any more.

America destroyed the South when we had a firm hold on it during the Civil War, and WE'RE the SANE ones...what's to stop Vladimir from doing the same thing, minus the principals, to prove a point?

Listen to that statement and then replace Pripyat with Kiev and thus you prove my point,

Ukraine wasn't wiped off the face of the earth in the war with Russia. And some people do visit Kiev. It's a thing you can pay money to do. A lot of it isn't even that radioactive anymore!

I dunno, it might still have a lot of background radiation.
