Soul food/peasant food from your country.

Postby Ferrous Oxide » Tue Jun 09, 2009 2:14 pm

I'm just curious about the simple traditional foods that you guys eat.

Right now, I'm gonna get me some varenyky. Ukrainian dumplings; potato and bacon filling in dough, boiled.

They're pretty fantastic.

Yeah, it gets the slimy look like dim sims, except these are full of real food, instead of cat.

Haggis, neeps and tatties, ta very much.

(Though mine's a vegetarian haggis.)

Döner kebab or spaghetti ice cream. Neither are originally from Germany...

For the love of all that I once thought I knew... I hope that the guy above me intended to say 'spaghetti AND ice cream.'

At any rate... I'm not from Ireland personally, but I'm half Irish, and I love corned beef slowcooked with cabbage, potatoes, and... mm, throw some carrots in there.

Of course you can never go wrong with breakfast for dinner either. Get some of that raisin-bread stuff and make french toast out of it. Throw some scrapple in there.... Mmmm.

Despite being largely carnivorous, I prefer veggie haggis (although offal haggis is delicious too).

It's peasant food. It's not meant to look pretty. Point is, it's awesome.

*drools*

All hail the yummy-looking dumplings!

I make up my own traditional food, drawing from a little bit of everything (just like my heritage is a little bit of everything) as my budget permits.

Like the potato and egg dish I like to fry up. I chop up some leftover boiled potatoes and onions and take some minced garlic from a jar and fry them in olive oil with (if I can get them) bell peppers. Some black pepper and (if I'm in the mood) curry powder come in a bit later. Then comes the scrambled egg. When the egg is done cooking through, I put Cheddar or Cojack cheese on top if I have any.

Other than what immigrants brought with them and what the native folk before them ate, my part of Canada doesn't really have a specific ethnic/peasant food. Ukrainian and Germanic foods though are actually pretty big in my section of the country. So yea, I love pierogies, bratwurst and other such things.

My area of Japan is famed for soba, buckwheat noodles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soba . I've become addicted to a bowl of hot soba with some mountain veggies and a raw egg in it.

We're also known for o-yaki, a kind of buckwheat dumpling that's stuffed with some kind of veggie (Though my favorite ones have apples in them), steamed, and then roasted a bit on an iron pan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyaki

Say, Nerv, is Oyaki similar to okonomiyaki?

Nope, they are very different. The only simmularity that they share is the 'yaki' part, aka, they are both grilled when cooked. Oyaki are stuffed dumplings whereas okonomiyaki is something more like a pancake (Kinda) where you take a batter made out of flour and other stuff and either mix (Osaka style) or layer (Hiroshima style) a number of different ingredients and then fry the hell out of it. The resulting yummy food is then topped with a sauce, noodles, fish flakes (That wave), and/or mayo and served hot off the grill.

Something as simple as a fish & chips would really hit the spot right about now.
