NSG Age Poll (Dec)

Postby AiliailiA » Sun Dec 09, 2012 8:55 pm

Image

I'm aware that the poll has more votes now, but I'm using the graph version from 331 votes because it's close enough to the same number as I have from the Dec 2011 thread. 348 where it is now is a little closer ... I may do all these again.

Image

While this looks like a demographic change, I think it's mostly an artifact from the choice of age-ranges in the polls. In particular, the blockiness of teenage results (2011) and the "shoulder" out to 36 (2012) probably aren't really "there".

We can turn this difference in the polling method to our advantage by making an average of the two graphs:

Image

(Oops, the top of the "number of posters" axis should be a 40 not a 30)

Image

A few things about this:
  1. The blue peaks and pink plateau above 40 are entirely artifacts. Numbers above 40 are almost identical, but in the December poll (this one) no-one called out an age over 56 so they aren't spread out as far as in June when an age of 73 was called out.
  2. The pink range from 37 to 40, is also mostly artifact. In the earlier poll there was a 25-40 range, in the latter it was cut back to 25-36. The blue is pulled down by being included in the sparsely-populated oldest range, while the pink is held up by posters in their late 20's who didn't call out.
  3. The blue range from 30 to 36 is somewhat artificial for the same reason (more younger posters, few call outs) but not entirely. In my opinion it shows around 5 or 6 extra posters at this time of year ... perhaps tertiary students finished with exams or full time employees winding down for Christmas.
  4. Something very strange happened in the 19 to 24 range. In June this was divided 19-20 and 21-24, in December it was divided 19-21 and 22-24. Only the 21 year olds moved from one range to the other, yet there's around 15 votes of change. It isn't plausible to me that there are 25 posters who voted, who are 21, so it's not all poll artifact. There are more early-20's folks around in June.
  5. From 13 to 18 there are no poll artifacts: both polls had single-year ranges. There are about 18 more of the youngest posters (13, 14 and 15) in the "summer" (northern hemisphere summer), and about the same number less of older teens. It feels like hundreds of them I know, but it's probably just that they post a lot rather than there really being very many.

And of course both polls were voluntary, self-selected, and subject to muliple voting. The range of error is huge, but like all polls there are valid comparisons to be made between two polls at different times, using the same methodology.

In July of this year I made an NSG Age Poll thread, just one month after the one before. That was a tactical error on my part: of course it annoyed people to be asked to do it all over again, just a few weeks later.

So I apologize for that, and beg that it is not too soon for another. It is one year now since the 2011 NSG Age Poll I started, so this one should be directly comparable with that one to show if NS General is getting older/younger or whatever.

As with the June and July threads, ages up to 18 have their own option in the poll. If you're one of those ages, voting in the poll is all you have to do to be fully counted in the graph. You can "call out" your name in the thread if you want everyone to know, but it doesn't make any difference to the graph.

Anyone 19 or older is strongly encouraged to post their age in years (and vote the appropriate option). To make the graph I take that one vote away from the range of years and add it to just that one year on the graph. For instance, if you're 20 and say so, I take 0.33 away from the 19, 20 and 21 columns (since you voted for all three) then add 1 to the 20-yo column.

If you don't want to call out your exact age, you can give a range. For instance, "25 to 30". In that example, I would take away 0.0833 (one thwelth of a vote) from every column in the 25 - 36 range, and add 0.167 to every column 25 to 30 inclusive. It doesn't matter if the range you give overlaps one of the poll ranges ... it's more complicated for me but I can do it. Calling out the exact range which is in the poll (eg "I'm 25 - 36") makes literally no difference to the graph. You can still do it if you want everyone to know, but a narrower range would be better for the graph if you don't mind.

From past experience, not many votes come in after two weeks. Therefore, if you have your birthday in the two weeks between Dec 10 and Dec 24, you can vote and call out either the younger or the older age, whichever you prefer.

Vote for your age, and call it out if you want to. :)

I don't think you have any clue how many 37+ readers this site actually has. I suspect your results will be scewed, primarily because us oldsters don't really give a shit about our own age and won't bother voting.

The ranges are based on the data. The goal is presumably to get as even a distribution as possible. July's poll saw very few people 37 years or older. In fact, they were the smallest group.

I'm 48, as mentioned in other age threads.

Nice.

I'm looking forward to the Tooth Seed. I have some bad teeth, and one in particular that's been worked on a dozen times and is mostly artificial now ... I wish I could just have it pulled out and plant a new one in the hole. And I don't care if it hurts as it's coming up. I've been through that and it was worth it to have new teeth!

Going to make the first graph now.

EDIT: First graph made with poll results:

13 ...... 1
14 ...... 1
15 ...... 1
16 ...... 3
17 ...... 1
18 ...... 4
19-21 .. 3
22-24 .. 6
25-36 .. 2
37-122 . 3

Call outs:
Seperates 18
Multiflow 33

Seperates is marked separately but the height of their column does not change (18 is a one-year-wide column)
Multiflow is marked separately but their range (25-36) is marked down from 0.167 to 0.083, and the called out age added at age 33.

Further EDIT:

Not counted as a "call out" though it almost certainly means you're 24.
