Not really the worst storm in US history, but certainly one of the worst on the East Coast. It's not very powerful (For which we should all be very thankful.), but it's huge. Words like gargantuan and massive seem to pale in comparison to the size of this storm. Since it's so big, and the winds that it produces are spread over such a large area, it's going to be able to spread all the love (destruction) around in a way most storms aren't able to.Grenartia wrote:Until I see Katrina-level devastation there, I call bullshit. It is a serious storm, no doubt, but to say its going to be worse than Katrina before it even hits is a major stretch.
Katrina was not even remotely the worst storm in US history. The Hurricane of 1900 killed around 8,000 people, and did billions more in damage (When adjusted for inflation). Also it's not the power of the storm. It's the size that matters right now.

katrina was not the worst storm in history, there was one in texas in 36 that destroyed galveston, and one in the 50's that destroyed connecticut. bertha in the 60,s.

I'm really worried about this, because I live in Perry, New York, which is located below Rochester, and East of Buffalo.

I never said Katrina was the worst (it does rank up there, and is the most recent bad storm in public memory, giving us a good benchmark). What I was calling bullshit on is calling it the 'most catastrophic storm in US history' before it even made landfall.Ethel mermania wrote:

Again, I never said that it was. It seems, you're confusing either the 1935 Labor Day hurricane (which hit Florida, and still remains one of the strongest storms on record, in terms of pressure), or the 1936 Hurricane 13, which seems to bear a lot of resemblence to Sandy, in terms of size, though it was actually a major hurricane, and developed in the peak of hurricane season (mid-september), and never apparently made landfall, with the 1900 hurricane, which still remains the deadliest hurricane on record.
Adjusted for inflation in 2004 USD, according to wiki, Hurricane Carol (the only Connecticut hurricane I found on wiki) was #19 for costliest US hurricanes. I recall for fact that Hurricane Katrina was the costliest hurricane in US history, and seeing as there's only 1 year of difference between 2004 and 2005, I don't think we can say that the value of inflation changed significantly enough to affect the results in any meaningful manner.
I couldn't find any Hurricane Bertha in the 60s. Instead, you may be thinking of TS Bertha, in 57, which according to wiki didn't do really that much damage (though its predecessor, which hit the same general area two months prior, Hurricane Audrey, holds the pre-Katrina record for the most deaths caused by a named storm).
Actually, I bother to do the research, instead of buying into hype.

There's also the New England Hurricane of 1938, which killed 600 overall and cost $4.7 billion in 2012 dollars.
