Not really the worst storm in US history, but certainly one of the worst on the East Coast. It's not very powerful (For which we should all be very thankful.), but it's huge. Words like gargantuan and massive seem to pale in comparison to the size of this storm. Since it's so big, and the winds that it produces are spread over such a large area, it's going to be able to spread all the love (destruction) around in a way most storms aren't able to.

Grenartia wrote:Until I see Katrina-level devastation there, I call bullshit. It is a serious storm, no doubt, but to say its going to be worse than Katrina before it even hits is a major stretch.

Katrina was not even remotely the worst storm in US history. The Hurricane of 1900 killed around 8,000 people, and did billions more in damage (When adjusted for inflation). Also it's not the power of the storm. It's the size that matters right now.

I never said Katrina was the worst (it does rank up there, and is the most recent bad storm in public memory, giving us a good benchmark). What I was calling bullshit on is calling it the 'most catastrophic storm in US history' before it even made landfall.

katrina was not the worst storm in history, there was one in texas in 36 that destroyed galveston, and one in the 50's that destroyed connecticut. bertha in the 60,s.

they say stuff like that so you buy newspapers, and watch the weather channel

Again, I never said that it was. It seems, you're confusing either the 1935 Labor Day hurricane (which hit Florida, and still remains one of the strongest storms on record, in terms of pressure), or the 1936 Hurricane 13, which seems to bear a lot of resemblence to Sandy, in terms of size, though it was actually a major hurricane, and developed in the peak of hurricane season (mid-september), and never apparently made landfall, with the 1900 hurricane, which still remains the deadliest hurricane on record.

Adjusted for inflation in 2004 USD, according to wiki, Hurricane Carol (the only Connecticut hurricane I found on wiki) was #19 for costliest US hurricanes. I recall for fact that Hurricane Katrina was the costliest hurricane in US history, and seeing as there's only 1 year of difference between 2004 and 2005, I don't think we can say that the value of inflation changed significantly enough to affect the results in any meaningful manner.

I couldn't find any Hurricane Bertha in the 60s. Instead, you may be thinking of TS Bertha, in 57, which according to wiki didn't do really that much damage (though its predecessor, which hit the same general area two months prior, Hurricane Audrey, holds the pre-Katrina record for the most deaths caused by a named storm).

Actually, I bother to do the research, instead of buying into hype.

Still worried about the NSers in NYC and related areas. It really only took the power of Twitter and the Internet as a whole to plunge me into the virtual frontline and shows today as to how important the Internet has been, and one thing I'd like to point out is how Twitter rebuked a CNN rumour that the NYSE trading floor had been flooded...

John Herrman interestingly points out that the internet of today, while exasperating, is very good at vetting ascertainable facts.

I can't stand CNN, it is worse than FOX. At least FOX is blatantly biased Christian conservative, whereas CNN pretends to be centralist and spouts BS 24/7 i.e. like it's continuous atheist bashing stories. Don't trust the media, trust yourself. :meh:

It's comming up on 6am EDT here (around Philly) and the winds have died down, the rain is slowing down and the power is still on, but we did have a brief blackout last night. It's too dark outside to look for damage, but I have all day to do that.

The closer you are to DC, the more flooding & tree damage. Va Beach got 8 to 12 inches of rain & I'm sure there is flooding in Norfolk & Hampton Roads as a result. I didn't see the flood results on the news, but I know that area pretty well.

My neighborhood has one uprooted tree that damaged 2 houses. Half the neighborhood's power is out. I was luckey this storm. My neighborhood is very old with 80 foot trees everywhere. I couldn't sleep knowing a tree cloud crash into my house at any minute. When to bed in the livingroom, staying away from the 2nd story bedrooms. Most of Baltimore is OK. Flooding is the main concern.

Someone posted that this is the worst storm in US history. I think that they mistaken that for the fact that this was the most intense storm that ever hit the east coast. Barometric pressure was the lowest ever recorded in Maryland. The lower the barometric pressure, the more intense the storm.
