What does your surname mean? Your heritage?

Postby Tamriela » Sat Oct 20, 2012 4:45 am

My surname is Asena and in Turkic/Mongolian

"The Wolf (Böri) symbolizes honour and is also considered the mother of most Turkic peoples. Asena (my surname xd) (Ashina Tuwu) is the wolf mother of Bumen, the first Khan of the Göktürks".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythology_ ... an_peoples

Thing is, every surname has a point of origin and the point of origin of my surname is Turkic/Mongolian which proves that my ancestors were Asiatic steppe warriors!

What do your surnames mean?

The purpose of this thread is to identify your heritage!

Assuming by Turkic you do not mean the Turkish language in particular but a Turkic language?

To answer your question, my surname is of Latin origin and was also common in the Norman era of Gaul, or France. I believe it is Latin for 'river mouth' but I am not entirely sure.

Kind of, well before the republic of Turkey, during the Ottoman era, people preferred and used Arabic and Persian names, but after Ataturk's Turkification program, he changed the language including basic words similar to the sakha turkic language (if you want you could compare basic words like soil, water, fire, etc between sakha and turkish language, you will find many similarities) and many people in Turkey started using Turkic names... batuhan, volkan, gokhan, korkut, atilla, etc........

and wow, you're ancestors were probably the gauls, you should be proud ;)

My surname is Göktürk. Coming from the old central asian Turkic tribe Göktürks. Or literally means '' Sky Turk ''.

My surname apparently "someone who lives in a cleared area in a woodland".

It is, however, extremely rare as a British surname.

My surname is of fairly obviously German origin, I have no idea what it means except that there are many others like it. I am primarily of Czech, Slovak, and Alsatian German blood.

It's a local name, something to do with living near a bunch of hills. Quite depressingly normal, actually. That's what I get for being a pleb through and through.

I'm not really sure, but I believe it's an Anglicisation of the name of a small village somewhere in Normandy which my family, presumably, were top dogs of some centuries ago. I haven't a notion what it might mean.
Tamriela wrote:Thing is, every surname has a point of origin and the point of origin of my surname is Turkic/Mongolian which proves that my ancestors were Asiatic steppe warriors!

It doesn't really, though. I mean, one of your ancestors could have adopted the name without actually being descended from Asiatic steppe warriors.

Nopes. Doesn't happen. Just the same as family trees are an exercise in truth rather than an amusing lie quickly tripped up by the adulterous nature of man.

Kendig. I don't know if it has meaning, really.
I'd assume it means I'm a pretty handy with a shovel, or other digging tools.

My surname more or less means "Son of Roy" or some such name, in Spanish. It also has roots in Puerto Rican governors, apparently.

Apparently it means you're from Cornwall, and it means "House of the King".

Trust Google at your own peril, though.

Coleman is an English take of the Old Irish name "Ó Colmáin" (descendant of Cólman), which comes from some missionary we sent to Europe who did pretty well for himself. It could also be the middle English "Colmann" (guy who collects charcoal), but I prefer the first. :p

My father always rambled on about royal heritage, so I assume that would be his reasoning. At best, I'd just assume I descend from a vassal who was lucky enough to inherit his lord's name.

It sounds a wee bit German, but I honestly have no clue whatsoever it mean. But I like to pretend it means "Very attractive person"
