No they didn't, and that is why this is annoying. The parents showed him what they THOUGHT communism was, which ended up being a facepalm worthy exercise. I bet if he said he liked black people they'd give him a stick and send him to a project for a month.

No. Communism requires more than one person to work. What they are showing him is that they have no idea what communism is, are unwilling to try it, and are quick to punish their children for having political beliefs. The fundamental lesson here seems to be "don't have a political belief unless you're willing for ignorant assholes to try and punish you for their imbecilic interpretation of reality."
