Partially yes this would be the reason; however these religions are even older than science.God was originally any power greater than man himself and used to explain surrounding phenomena. So all belief systems are based on science as well, which is why they all became more profound with time or if they didn't evolve -vanished.
I suppose that different perception and point of view can be different thing.So I believe there are forces greater than us that are not deities and that due to different angles of looking at things, different perceptions, we can change our world views according to the various stresses and changes in life to achieve varying results. Therefore, I am a chaoist.
