How old are you?

Postby AiliailiA » Sat Dec 10, 2011 7:07 am

It's the age poll again.

There will be complaints about the poll. There always are. So before complaining, read this:

I've looked at previous polls, and seen that the Generalites who vote are heavily weighted to the teenage years. A poll by decades (13-22, 23-32, etc) would surely show this, but it's not very interesting, and can be extracted from other kinds of polls.

So this poll has greater resolution in the age range I'm expecting to be most populated. That is, rather than discovering the obvious, it aims to let the majority of voters know how many other posters are near their age. The last catagory (49+) lumps a 50 year old in with a 90 year old ... and that's just bad luck for them. It seems more important to me to let an 18 year old know how many other posters are within a year or two of their own age ... quite simply because there will be more of them than there are of posters 50 and older.

If (as I expect) most Generalites are teenagers and young adults, the greater resolution at younger ages will also allow a more accurate estimate of median age.

There is no <13 catagory, because anyone who votes that way is either joking, or in violation of the site terms and conditions.

The first three options span two years each. The next two span three years. The sixth one spans four ... so you can't just look at the bars in the poll and see the age pyramid of NSG visually.

For that, I will fill in the graph below. The poll options are spread out horizontally to account for how many years they span and you CAN see a curve of all the ages.

Results, as in the poll above, but scaled to account for the different number of years in each range:

Image

I will edit this graph from time to time. (Edited once, 3 votes) (Edit 2, 64 votes) (Edit 3, 128 votes) (Edit 4, 184 votes)

This graph will no longer be updated

Image

(Edit 5, 220 votes) (Edit 6, 306 votes)

Edit 7: By single years, using both poll data and ages claimed by posters:

Image

Edit 8: Estimates by year, showing preponderance of poll data (340) vs. data from posts (90):

Method for anyone who cares. Questions and suggestions are welcome.

Feel free to discuss age, ageism, legal rights etc. Or criticize the poll. I know you will :(

Posting an exact age is good. When I go to estimate average and median ages of NSG, I will subtract the declared ages from the voted ages (because the declared age is more precise).

That is, if you voted "17 - 18" but you declared 18, your age will be counted as 18 instead of 17.5

Assumption: anyone who posts to the thread also voted. Seems a pretty safe assumption.
