Anybody who thinks the quality of debate on NSG or the quality of posts on II has been in decline lately clearly was not here back in 2003.

Although, really, it's usually once every year or two (or sometimes more often) that we get a bunch of doomsayers talking about how SURELY, THIS TIME, NS is doomed to become a cesspit of memes and horrible RPing and how it's already on the path to becoming the new 4chan.

Funnily enough, people complain about basically the same things on 4chan. Although there it's usually trolling.

I have actually probably started a thread with a similar topic every year I've been here. Probably not the first or second. But I haven't actually felt that I was wrong. This place is stupider, and you could see the progression. We lose good poster after good poster to the burnout of dealing with idiots.

Really? It's dumber than when MKULTRA and other such people were around? From my perspective, the only real shift in the individual posters has been a general moderation of political views. It used to be that saying you were a conservative was basically a death sentence. Now we've got a ton of conservative members who voice their views and aren't automatically shouted down.

Of course, I much prefer the roleplaying side of things, so I can't speak definitely on the subject of it stupidification or lack thereof. I know that II has lost some good people, but it's also seen the banning of some not-so-good people as well, so it balances out in a way. Even if the mods are jerks[/obligatory]

This forum still has pretty good quality. The only "going downhill" effects, I think, were the leaving of Cat-Tribe and Hammurab and the seemingly gradual yet continuous tightening of rules on the forum.

It used to be that we were told to "grow a thicker skin" if we got offended.

I haven't seen that phrase in I don't know how long.

It seems like taking a borderline opinion is, itself, nearly an expression of trolling or flamebaiting anymore, rather than the core of discussion.

Other than that, things are going ok.
