The North Korea (DPRK) thread

Postby Naurobia » Thu Oct 13, 2011 9:28 pm

So what do you guys and girls think about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)? Personally I think that it is not a true socialist state and more of a fascist state and I oppose their human rights abuses (almost as bad as Oceania in 1984) and nuclear weapons program. Not to mention their overly aggressive foreign policy but then again the United States is a connoisseur of overly aggressive foreign policies.

North Korea is a Stalinist shithole.

But it isn't the worst place in the world.

It's a good reminder that freedom shouldn't be taken for granted, that a powerful few can control impoverished masses...

Laos and Burma are probably better than the DPRK. And even for the African countries in the midst of civil war, life might still be better than in the oppressive country that is North Korea.

EDIT: But to put it in perspective, I'm very much ideologically oppose to Juche.

I disagree. The GDP per capita of the DPRK is 5 times that of the worst africans countries. They live in an oppressive stalinist Kleptocracy- but there is more wealth, food, and security in the DPRK than there is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Liberia, Guinea Bassau, Niger, and similar such countries.

It's a fine line. But if you toe the party line, join the military, and serve Kim Jong Il- you probably won't starve. Additionally, in the DPRK, a truck full of bandits won't roll up to your house, rape your wife, steal your food, and kill you. The government might do several of those things, but not all at once.

But for the vast majority of North Koreans, they will indeed starve. The GDP and food is mostly based in the hands of a select few.

Indeed. Most of the basic commodities are subsidized by their government. However, they cannot really grow due to sanctions imposed on them.

That's very misleading. For years, North Korea received aid (and still does) and it almost certainly ends up in the hands of the rich political elite, or the military.

Even then, the sanctions are their own damn fault.

Not that I'm for shoving democracy down everyone's throats, but Kimmy needs to realize there's other nations more powerful than his in the international community, and he needs to play ball with them or else they blockade his ass.

Discover disco music in the DPRK and you'll be on the first truck to Yodok, or some hell hole worse than that. No joke - DPRK citizens have been sent to the gulag for disco dancing in parlours that appeal to foreigners. Decadent western culture, don't you know?

For those of you with nerve and resolve, google searth the North Korean Gulag. Better yet, watch youtube videos pertaining to the same. Not for the faint of heart.

Id rather visit North Korea any day over Mexico, in one nation you have the high possibility of being gunned down while in the other my freedom of going places is restricted. I chose restriction over the chance of being gunned down.
