Tough news... hate to see this happen to anyone. I lost a close friend to leukaemia just a few weeks ago, and can't begin to imagine what he and those close to him have got to be feeling. Thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, his friends, and his teammates as he faces the battle ahead.

Hopefully, he'll win this battle. Just won't be the same watching Villa without the threat of another epic goal from the man.

Great to see all the support, though. Also, there's only one Stiliyan Petrov, one Stiliyan Petrov, one Stiliyan Peeetrooov!

God, the boos in the Liverpool-Newcastle match are deafening. Carroll, Bellamy, Enrique and then Henderson when he came on.

And now Liverpool's season has gone from bad to worse. :p

I doubt we'll match Germany's record in that respect, 6 years would be a bit of a stretch for us.

Still, hopefully our hooligans want cause anywhere near as much damage either.

Hey, Kenny, here's some advice for you.

The end of this season, quit at Liverpool. Let someone young take over. Then, talk to the SFA and drop some hint of interest in the Scotland job. Levein will be out quicker than you can count to three. Take that job, boyo!

How many of those teams have a realistic chance of winning La Liga?

It's a boring league that's designed to ensure Barcelona or Real Madrid will always win it.

It's important on this Good Friday football fans remember the long haired man who suffered and died on the end of a cross. Happy Easter Andy Carroll.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

Point is, even the teams with no chance of winning the league are competitive in Europe~

You're missing the point. A fairly regular claim is that La Liga is, on average, piss-weak - barring the two top dogs, obviously.

This claim is seemingly wrong.

And there are quite a few handy teams in La Liga. Barça, Real, Villarael, Seville, Valencia, Athletcio Madrid, but the Premier League has always, and will always be the best league in the world. The only nationalities that play in La Liga are Spainards, the Portuguese and South Americans, everyone else goes to play in the PL

Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

Except for the Germans, Dutch, Mexicans, French, Ivorians...

Besides, Spain, Portugal and South American countries make up five of the current top eight in both the FIFA and Elo world rankings.

And...maybe there's a link between the vast number of Spanish players in the Spanish league and the fact that Spain are reigning World and European champions? While teams like City, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea often have only two or three English players in their starting elevens.

There's only so many Spanish players in the Spanish league because, outside of Barcelona, Real Madrid and teams like Malaga who have recently become cash-heavy, they can't afford differently.

Which is, yet again, down to La Liga being set up to ensure that Barcelona or Real Madrid will always win it.

Why do you think Athletico Madrid had to sell Aguero and Torres and Valencia had to sell Mata, Silva, Albiol and Villa? Because they almost bankrupted themselves trying to break the inherently unfair hegemony that is killing the Spanish domestic game.

It is not 'set up' that way, it has developed to this point. Helped, I might add, by teams such as Atletico Madrid and Valencia, who recently agreed to a collective tv deal which gives 35% of the total pot to Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's hardly the Clasico clubs' fault, either. What are they meant to do, turn down millions of Euro to give to their competitors?

Also, Atletico aren't exactly helped by being run by a succession of nutters. 50+ managers in 30 years is not exactly a solid foundation for success. Not that Jesus Gil was known for solid foundations. Shutting down your youth academy is also pretty stupid...more so when it means Raul goes to Real Madrid for nothing. Imagine if a Barca president decided to shut down La Masia. From what I've read, Cerezo and Gil Marin aren't much better - certainly when it comes to giving managers a chance.
