Without the US's direct involvement, the Allies would have still won via the USSR.

So, no. The Allies would not have lost WWII.

Of course not. The Soviet army was already fighting 70% of German forces. Germany could never win. The death toll would be higher and I think the war would last much longer, 1947 or 1948.

Once the Nazi's fucked up in Russia, they lost the war. Because the Russians pwned the Eastern German Armies with ease. No matter how many Russians the Germans killed, they just kept comming.

IIRC from high school history class, the allied victory in WWII is primarily a product of Britain holding out long enough to turn the Nazis against the Soviets and the Soviets using things like the scorched earth policy once confronted with the Nazis. The US involvement obviously helped but I think its significance is overrated, at least among US-centric people in both the Internet and mainstream media who credit the US with the allied victory.

Though for what it's worth, the most relevant point of all is that we can't go back in time and take the US out of the picture, so we'll never really know for sure; we can only speculate. This is a problem that both the "we saved your ass" crowd and the "we'd have won without you" have in common; they are blindly asserting unprovable conclusions...

Depends on the definition of "lost" but in the long run yah probably would have "lost". Also depends on the definition of America because that does equal all of North and South America and without the Canadians would the British held out as long?

The USSR destroyed the vast majority of axis forces, and had tokyo in bomber range since the very beggining. So no.

I have a slight disagreement with your scenario - if the Soviets were attacking Germany proper in 1945 or 1946, the Germans would almost certainly have pulled troops from France. At that point, Britain and Canada could have pulled off a lesser version of D-Day. France would have remained democratic, but Germany would have gone Communist.

To put it simply, the American involvement in WWII merely sped up victory.

Though lucky them, they got to the missile technology before the Soviets.

The USSR would have controlled more land, the war would have lasted longer, and Japan would have had a much more firm hold on the pacific, perhaps even remained an Empire.

But if you're talking about the defeat of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, than yes, the allies would have won anyway.

Wel, that depends. Without the Lend-Lease Act, surely. Not really involved militarily? The Allies might have won, albeit maybe a few years after 1945.

Even without the USSR, I do not believe that Britain would 'be speaking german'. They tried that once, well before the US entered the war. Because we had air and naval superiority, any invasion fleet would have been sunk with ease, hence why Operation Sealion was cancelled. It would have required a serious build-up of British troops and resources to even consider an invasion of france on its own tough, and the war would have lasted many years longer.

I think a better question would be what would Postwar Europe look like if the United States had remained neutral.

I'm not quite sure which way the war would have gone, but didn't the USSR prevail due, in large part, to aid from the US? I could have sworn I heaing a quote from Zhukov that went something like "without the US, the Soviet Union would have collapsed by the end of 1941."

Think about it though. Imagine if Japan were to attack Russia instead of USA. Russia would have been fighting 2 fronts, giving the Axis the advantage. Also, the americans fought the italians in Northern africa, so Northern africa would have been under axis control. I believe that if the following events happened, the axis would have won:

America was not attacked
Japan attacked Eastern Russia
Germany started out with more U-boats to isolate Britain

Pearl harbor was actually a blessing in disguise to the allies.

Would we have lost it without America? Dunno. Britain would probably have lost Asia for longer before eventually reclaiming it with muchos help from the USSR. The Russians were always off to beat the Germans, though, and the German Airforce was unlikely to beat the RAF over the channel, so I doubt there would ever have been a land invasion of the British Isles.

Lend Lease was irrelevent. The British would have survived anyway, and the Soviets would have still rolled over the Germans.

Give yourselves a bit more credit.

I love all these definitive answers from NSG's numerous alternate-universe experts.

Is the question whether the Allies would have lost without US military involvement? In that case, my opinion is probably not. Direct military conflict between US and German troops did not occur until the tide had turned against Germany in Russia. They had arguably already lost the war before they ever engaged American soldiers. The outcome would have been very different, because it's questionable whether Britain had the logistics and manpower to operate the Normandy invasion alone, but Germany was very likely going to lose the war before the US ever got heavily involved.

Now, is the question whether the Allies would have lost without any US participation at all? If that is the case, then my opinion switches to most likely. While American military involvement may not have been necessary for defeating Germany, US economic support to both Britain and Russia was essential to their survival in the early months and years of the war when Germany held the distinct upper hand. Without the Lend-Lease program, it's debatable whether Britain could have survived German blockades or the Battle of Britain. And it's very possible that, without US hardware, the Soviet Union would not have been able to slow German advances enough to ensure that Germany was unable to capture their key objectives, especially the Baku oil fields. The US supplied the USSR with over 2,000 trains (their primary means of supply and troop movement) and over 18,000 aircraft. It's possible that without this aid, Soviet resistance would have been diminished enough that Germany could have achieved victory on the Eastern Front.
