Is she really in danger or ...

Postby Anti-Social Darwinism » Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:46 pm

has she been brainwashed to believe that she is?

It strikes me, from reading the article, that her family loves her very much. They left their home country to get medical treatment for her when she was much younger. I mean how much love does it show to go from a familiar, comfortable setting to a strange place with strange customs just for the health of one child?

I believe them when they say that she's free to practice Christianity. I also agree when they say that she needs understand the religion she grew up with.

The bottom line is that she's still legally a minor. Ethical religious groups might attempt to answer her questions, but they would make no move to convert her until she was legally of age. I'm of the opinion that she had the misfortune to get in with a shady group with an unethical leadership - a borderline cult, if not an outright cult - as you know, one of the first things a cult will do is try to alienate a victim, excuse me, potential convert, from their family.

A 17 year old girl, doubtful of the faith she has been raised in, converts and the runs off to a religious leader she met on the internet without so much as a note to her family.

There's shenanigans afoot, mark my words.

She's not.

"Legally a minor" at 17? She should have run away to Cuba!

If she honestly thinks that her parents would kill her for converting, then the situation needs more examination; either she's right (in which case her parents need counseling) or she's wrong (where she needs counseling).

She is 17 they should just emancipate her and be done with it.
She doesn't want to live at home, she has one more year before she can move out on her own legally anyways.

Well said.

I'll contribute a bland endorsement of religious liberty for good measure: no one should be (or in any likelihood *can* be) forced to believe something they otherwise would not. Not by law or through social pressure or any other way. Did this fit the context? I hope so.

I suspect she's in greater danger from the church than her family.

This is the church: http://www.globalrevolutionchurch.org

Interestingly they have a statement of their "values" that includes:
7. We believe in building aBiblical (sic) family culture, nurturing parents and children alike, and ushering them into the presence of God.

In what way does inducing teenaged children to run away builds a "Biblical family culture"?

Perhaps they bought her? I'll just have a peek in this old book I have ...

Leviticus 19:20-22 wrote:And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering. And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him."

There ya are. It's OK for the priest to bonk her, but it'll cost him a sheep.

I'm surrounded by it everywhere, always spoken by absolute jackasses who don't know even the meaning of the word "angst". I seriously can't fucking wait until I graduate from High School.
