There's a thread like this every six months or so. Part of it is nostalgia; the people you recognise stop posting, you fall out of the loop with in-jokes, don't feel so connected etc. But certainly, since towards the end period of the Jolt era I feel like standards have dropped dramatically.

We've lost a lot of good posters. That's going to have an effect, and quality accumulated over years isn't going to be compensated for quickly. But it's more than that. I think it's a lot down to Forum 7. Not to say for a moment that it's a bad place or should be got rid of. But it's very much a separate community with relatively little overlap with NSG. In the past, we had social threads where we'd discuss non-political or non-'hard' news items. Now they pretty much get carted over to F7 without much question. So there's not much opportunity for generalites to hang out and get to know each other.

I remember in the past I was reasonably friendly with some posters on the right. It's because in the social threads we could talk about non-political things. You don't so much flame and troll people you feel that you know on some level. Along with the disappearance of the old 'core', this has created a situation where I feel the social element has gone, and it's effectively a dry debating club between people largely - like most of the population - incapable of quality debate. I fully admit I've got dragged into the mess of nothing but childish partisan bickering and that I've been part of the problem.

In reality, it's only habit that keeps me here, since the elements I used to enjoy are gone or severely diluted. A community takes a long time to build up, and I think if we want to re-establish it a lot of conscious work will have to come from all sides.

That has merit. I hang around F7 too, but us Generalites are predominantly creatures of habit and wouldn't bother going to F7 to participate in threads like, for example, Dyakovo's sexiest poster thread. And it's no fun when no Generalites participate.

F7 is pretty good, but General seems mostly for arguing and having discussions.

It's not just that, though. A number of the posters I can think of from the "golden days" of NSG are still around, more or less. But they seem to have entirely lost any sense of humour/sarcasm and all they do is rehash the same arguments over and over again. Perhaps I was mistaken in my earlier assessment of them, mind.

It is a general problem. When you have to make the same arguments again and again, it gets boring and frustrating.
How many times has TCT and Neo Art had to explain any given point of law they have clarified?

Though this is just part of life, people tend to hold the same views and eventually you end up always holding the same conversations over and over again with them.

This is hardly the phenomenon that people think it is. New people come to the forum and have a topical discussion. Shocker, it may be something that has been covered in the seven or so years that the forum has existed and if you've managed to be here long enough some of that shit might actually look familiar.

It'd be fantastic if there was some sort of ever growing primer that would let new posters know what has been 'established' by the forum, but that's not how it works and honestly shouldn't be.

Honestly, this is just another flavor of bullshit 'punk rock cred.' "They were better when they were unsigned." "I was into them before they sold out." "When the forum was new too me it was fresh and exciting (never mind that to the posters that had been around for a while before you got here, you were just retreading all the things that had been going on long before you got there) and now it's all old hack..."

For sure. But discussion can sometimes be lighthearted or social.

Let me put it this way. Take any successful forum on a given topic. That topic forms its core, but for a community to form (a prerequisite for civilised discussion) the members need to occasionally step back from petty arguments around the topic area of choice - here, largely politics - and talk about other things. So yes, mostly. The problem is that this mostly has increasingly become an 'entirely', feeding back into the general quality of discussion across all topics.

Well there is a difference between a topic being revisited with old ideas being addressed and new ones added to and the exact same poster making the exact same bogus legal claim with only a slight modification of the facts.

These issues have been raised at fairly regular intervals since the move from Jolt. Perhaps the steady inaction of those in charge is a sign that this is the way it is, and maybe we should all just piss off to the other forums we inhabit and stop complaining about their forum, because nothing is going to change.

A quick perusal of the front page...
"Mama Nana's Bistro & Capital City of F7: Part IV "
"Nap's Boozery...Now with *hic*....alcohol poisoning "
"How popular/famous is the person above you?2 "
"kill using three words "
"Guess what the flag above you represents. "
"Tell A Lie About The Person Above You "
"Rate the Flag above you II "
" Would you want to destroy the nation above you. "

RPs and "say x about the x above you" threads? I'm alright, thanks.
