It's not particularly bad. There's a decent amount of equality, it's really more a case of tradition being hard to uproot. Rationally, the argument was elevated by circumstance leading me to be initially mistrustful of strange men and circumstance leading him to be wary of white French speakers.

It's not uncommon to have language barrier issues.

Also, language translation is fucking atrocious, and many people fall into that sort of mentality when their second language is not that great yet.

If the guy is like that, and tried to communicate in English it could be that he tried a direct, mechanical translation of his own language also. And that can backfire.
