Nintendo Switch (NX) Has Finally Been Revealed...

Postby Republic Of Varra » Thu Oct 20, 2016 4:27 pm

Announcement trailer for the elusive console:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5uik5fgIaI

It has finally happened. Nintendo fans around the world are frothing out the mouth for Nintendo's new console. It has been a year since it has first announced, and rumors/speculation was our only clue for the most part of what it actually was.

This morning, 10am EST, Nintendo announced their new console, The Switch, to compete in the console race. It is a hybrid console, in which it acts as a home console and a portable console. It seems to be cartridge based, and we already have seen titles that it will supposedly be released with in March 2017.

What say you Nationstates about this new endeavor for Nintendo? Will Nintendo finally come clawing it's way back into the spotlight? Or will it be another financial failure like the Wii U...

Considering the shit Nintendo has been doing for the past decade, I won't surprised if it sucks.

It might be too early to build another next generation console. I'm fine with the Wii U still, and won't be buying this in the meantime.

I can understand small handhelds, but consoles just need to finally die. And I say that as someone that grew up on nothing but consoles.

Nintendo's strategy seems to be that they want to be the lowest priced with regards to consoles, they don't wish to directly compete with the Xbox One or PS4 but are content with making hardware which can satisfactorily play their games. They will run off the strength of their exclusive franchises such as Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon.

The design which is depicted in the video looks rather interesting and might work. Although I'm not sure how it would translate so far as wear and tear goes. If consumers will have complaints about it breaking from daily abuse or if it'll get good reviews.

It's streamlining the approach that was taken with the PS3 and Vita.

Doesn't this belong in A&F?

Anyway, if Nintendo keeps their promises of third party support and seamless use, then it'll probably be a success. If not, then hello Wii U 2.0.

I disagree.

Consoles don't need to die, they need to go back to what they were good at, local multiplayer, plug and play, etc...

The Wii U's tablet controller didn't attract buyers so Nintendo decided to go all in and make a gaming tablet.

I am intrigued, but based on the information available so far I can't offer any solid "it'll be awesome/it'll be shit" flavor opinions. The concept is very intriguing, but without more concrete data on the hardware, pricing, and so on, it's still far too early to tell if it is going to be well-executed, or poorly-executed.

I've been largely disillusioned with Nintendo the last few years (Xbox 360 & PS4 for me!), with the only Nintendo systems I've owned being the original Nintendo DS and 3DS, and my older consoles like the N64, Gamecube, and SNES. I wasn't a huge fan of the WII, and only would consider the WII U for Zelda. That said...I'm impressed with the Nintendo Switch, and I think it looks fantastic. I'd definitely give it a go for ye olde Mario and Zelda games, and Skyrim? On Nintendo? I'm very okay with this.

I thought VR was the latest trend?

While I can certainly see the appeal of the Switch system of having a fully portable console that allows multiplayers too. I wonder if thats a part of the strategy along with things like Pokemon Go for Ninentndo to be the new 'social game system' vs Playstaion VR focussing on cutting yourself off from everyone but the virtual world.
Though really a VR system plugged into the Switch would be awesome.

I also think the removable controllers are going to be a headache to keep track of - it would be hilarious is Nintendo makes more money on replacement controllers than it does on actual games.

It can. Many cartridges can hold tons more information than discs now a days.

The big questions will no doubt be what sort of hardware it possesses, (can it compete with Xbox one/PS4 let alone the 2017 upgrades[obviously not]) the price, and how easy they make it for third party game developers to make games for it.

Also, will they have a new metroid game to sell with it? :)

*edit* also, if you look at it from a business perspective it could be both combining their home console and handheld console market, meaning no more needing two consoles to playback all nintendos games, and it could also take a stake in the developing mobile/tablet gaming market. This could be huge.

I see them competing against themselves on the handheld market.
Biggest issue though, as is usual with Nintendo consoles at this point, will probably be hardware issues. I very much doubt they'll match the PS4 and Xbox One, and even if they do, the 4K versions are around the corner. The size alone is probably a handicap in that respect.
Of course, the size probably affects the storage as well.

That said, I do think it's a really neat concept and probably will be very enjoyable-I just don't see it as being viable.
I'm back for a bit

Thank god they made another gimmicky system as opposed to launching a strong fresh IP.

Or making a decent Metroid game that isn't Prime.

Someone hasn't been keeping up with technology...

Cartridges of today are very different than, say, N64 cartridges. Thanks to SD card technology (Which can hold 128+ gigs of data), along with various other advances, cartridge space is much more open and much less of a hassle than console disks are today.

I tend to dislike gimmicks from Nintendo...

But I actually like the look of this system. I'd definitely roll with it. I mainly play Nintendo for Mario and The Legend of Zelda anyways, maybe Starfox.
