Yeah, I went through a phase of that at my first anime con. (Anime Expo 1999!) The trick is to get picky about what you purchase. For instance, I don't generally get posters or pencilboards or wallscrolls anymore, nor do I gobble up just about any Gundam model kit that crosses my path. These days it's mostly DVD/Blu-rays, animation cels, high-end figures, that sort of thing. (Speaking of which, I still have to get these two Slayers cels I have framed!)

Also, gotta be wary of knock-offs. (One reason most of my figure purchases nowadays come straight from the manufacturer! No second-guessing at conventions... plus it tends to be cheaper to just preorder the damned thing and know I'll get a legit one for sure than it is to try and hunt it down after it's sold out!)

I'm picky with Wallscrolls and figures, got meself a Hatsuyuki figure.

Meh. Probably won't ever finish it. Just didn't seem to catch my attention and was more of a spur-of-the-moment attempt anyways.

Well, the whole setup is sort of based around getting a hardcore* experience.

Has anybody seen laughing under the clouds yet I'm a little interested in it and currently watching the first three episodes to get a feel of it.

Most of the people I know who collect usually just stick with one series: their favorite. Apparently that helps with costs.

I'm in the middle of introducing a friend to anime/rewatching a bunch of my old favorites, too. :D Slayers, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, we'll probably do Bebop at some point, and Trigun... good times!

We have learned though, that the Oh My Goddess! OVA.... really hasn't aged well. Not so much the art style or the animation, just the story pacing and sheer volume of stuff they had to cut from the manga since it's only like 5 episodes. My brother-in-law was very sad at this discovery, 'cause he loves the series and the OVA was one of his favorites for a very long time. ^^;

-The Unified Earth Governments- wrote:Sub fans annoy me.

Eh, the whole "sub vs dub" thing has died down a LOT since the 90s. I think most sub-purists these days are from the older crowd who first got into anime where the dub versions were some combination of bad voice acting, chopped up/edited/censored to hell and back, or just flat out not available. I think that really helped instill this sense of "dubs are inferior because they're badly voiced and censored" that a lot of sub purists from that period still believe despite that no longer being the case. Dubbing quality has skyrocketed since then, along with an increase in accurate localizations and better access to uncut versions. (Somewhere, I still have a terrible quality VHS fansub of the History of Trunks special from DBZ...)

Personally, it depends on the series for me. Some stuff I prefer the dub, some stuff I prefer the sub, and there's even some stuff where I'm okay with either version. For instance, I cannot STAND Dragonball Z in Japanese; Goku's had the same voice actor in Japan from when the character was still a little kid... and while the woman who voices him gives it her all... well, it just does NOT fit the character once he's an adult! On the other hand, I can't stand the Rurouni Kenshin dub; the voices just don't fit and there are a lot of concepts that just don't translate well. Meanwhile, Yu Yu Hakusho and pretty much most of the Gundam multiverse I'm fine with either subbed or dubbed. Gurren Lagann I prefer the sub, but I think that's mostly because I was exposed to the sub first, the dub is also pretty damned good.
