Kerbal Space Program!

Postby The BranRiech » Thu May 29, 2014 7:36 am

So, fellow PC-gamers (Or dirty console peasants who are simply interested), how many of you have heard of or played the whacky-yet-realistic space sinulator? I want to hear your stories of triumph or failure, or even just funny stories about your endeavors into the stars.

Made it to the Mun, lander tipped over, Jebediah stuck. Sending a team of KSC's best and brightest in a new, improved rocket to bring him back...the first attempt had a "warp error", i.e. I forgot to slow it back down to normal game speed, that flung the lander in to solar orbit, we were barely able to get back to Kerbin.

I've landed on the Mun three times, only two returned safely. I'll post the pictures when I have access to a computer.

Love it. Not very good at it, which is funny because I build model rockets, but fun as shit.

Well, that didn't work as planned...now there are three Kerbals stuck on the Mun.

I've got the Firespitter pack installed, and I remember building a small helicopter with two SRBs attached as cruise missiles. It went well enough, and I've got a fair share of failures as well. Most aren't fatal though. There's a lot of me just failing to get things into orbit.

I've landed on the Mun and Minmus and have gotten back again, but somehow docking spaceships eludes me.

I can't even get out of Kerbin's atmosphere.

I'm new to it and haven't played much due to me getting it then being swamped with work, but I'll be sure to play it more once summer vacation arrives.

Anyhow, as for my adventures that I've had so far: I've built many different editions of rockets and have had about ten or so attempts at escaping the atmosphere and entering orbit. I have failed every single time so far, falling back to Kerbin every single time. HOWEVER! I have yet to have a single casualty. Once I had a rocket blow up on ignition, with tons of boosters and stuff flying everywhere and explosions all over the places, but my upper section was still intact. I managed to time my boosts just right to get the pod thing to stop spinning, and activated the parachutes just in time to stop everyone from dying horribly.

I might need a whole lot of work on my rocket-designing, but I'm an ace pilot! :D

Behold, Scott Manley's KSP tutorials!

And yeah, docking is a bloody pain in the ass. Part of why I have yet to try and build any space stations yet, despite having rough ideas in my head about creating and maintaining a series of fuel depots in orbit around most of the Kerbin system's planets.

I prefer to do trial by error in my adventures into Space. I'm flight testing a replica of the Soyuz spacecraft right now that I made. Going to stick a docking port on the crew module and use it on a space station at a later date. It's fun enough to fly around, and is pretty fun to re-enter with.

I never needed tutorials.

Admittedly, the only tutorial I have used was Scott Manley's (older, for version 0.18) docking tutorial- the rest has been trial and error and occasional inspiration from Insane Rockets Division. :D

Anybody got any .craft files to share around? I'd be happy to upload some of mine if anybody's interested. (Tsaroplane Mk-II is a particular favorite because it's so bloody damn nimble!)

I've tried some missions on Kerbal now and then. They have a habit of failing spectacularly.

I've used a few tutorials, mostly for how to rendezvous and dock. Haven't managed a dock yet. Mostly focusing on figuring out gravity assists on my own.

Got the game a few weeks ago, and I'm having a blast tinkering around with it. I haven't actually gotten to the Mun or any other planets successfully, but I have mastered the fine arts of lithobraking and dooming astronauts to 10 000-year orbits around the Sun.

Lithobraking, good times! Especially the unplanned variety.

Is it at all weird that I'm sort of roleplaying in KSP? I assume the role of the Branriech Space Program, and find actual fun in testing my Moon Lander's spaceworthiness in orbit above the Earth so we can beat those darn Americans in the Space Race?

I assume it's why KSP lacks a story. I sent a modified Soyuz up into orbit with the crew module replaced with a lander of the same size and shape, and now I'm just flying the lander around the main ship.

You're preaching to the choir, I've got a whole portfolio of rockets named after various Soviet programs. Vostok I was the first Kerbal in Kerbin orbit, Voshkod II was the first to orbit the Mun, Venera IV was the first to achieve solar orbit and return, Luna VI was the first to land on the Mun and Soyuz has proven itself as the main launch vessel for space probes in Munar as well as solar orbit.

Most of mine get boring/snarky names. Like the Fail Flyer, Drunk Turkey, Bad Things... the more functional get dubbed stuff like Munar Lander Mk-III (with my various lift vehicles generally named for the mission they were perfected on, such as the Lifter-ML3 or the Lifter-DL5.)

I like to name after Soviet spacecraft when they succeed, except the original Soyuz I,Venera I or Voshkpd II. I prefer to not to speak about those.v Or Soyuz III for that matter.
