I haven't seen these programs, but my daughter does enjoy them. She is seventeen years old now, so it did concern me that she was still watching such things, but it seems to me that these programs are not restricted to younger children.

They really aren't. Both Avatar: The Last Airbender and the sequel series The Legend of Korra contain some pretty mature themes which have really helped to attract a much older fanbase, while still being something the younger audience can enjoy. I very highly recommend both as solid fantasy action/adventure/drama/comedy series that are well-written, beautifully animated, and just flat-out entertaining no matter what age group you're in.

I falsely judged the program based on the fact that it is animated. I do not have the time to watch such a thing, nor do I have much desire to. It is more clear now, though, why my daughter still enjoys it.

It should not be concerning for an adult to watch animated programming. In fact, I view it as a superior medium, since it is not restricted by special effects budgets, and thus a lot more can be done with an animated show then can be done in live action.

Interesting view. I never thought about it that way. To be honest, I don't entertain myself with television very often. My wife and I used to watch one film each Friday night.

It's a quirky cultural thing, for sure. In the West for some reason, there's this ingrained assumption that animation = childish entertainment for kids that tends not to be that deep or emotionally challenging (though that has been broken down in more recent years.) Meanwhile in other parts of the world (being an anime fan, Japan springs immediately to mind,) that notion doesn't exist, and you'll have cartoons aimed at young audiences, but also ones expressly aimed at older teen audiences, or adults-only, up to and including the animated porn that is most definitely NOT for kids- animation is just another creative medium and used across genres and age groups the same way live action television or film-making is seen in the West. And the subject matter ranges from the vapid and childish all the way up to some seriously intense and thought-provoking examinations of human nature.

Avatar definitely takes some cues from anime, but then the creators are anime fans themselves and it shows. Aside from the more kid-friendly adventuring elements, it's got some pretty heavy drama and characters trying to wrestle with surprisingly deep moral conflicts. Most of the especially heavy or mature themes regarding war, loyalty to family/nation versus doing the right thing, and the idea that good and evil are not a clear-cut binary are liable to go sailing right over the heads of the younger audiences, but can pull some pretty emotional responses out of adult viewers.

I could probably pull off a full-blown critical analysis of the recurring themes, story elements, and character development if I was so inclined and it wasn't almost 3 in the morning. Hell, somebody could probably pull off an entire academic analysis just of Zuko's storyline in the series without even touching on the parallel narratives of his character arc and Aang's.

Shame. It looked good from the video I saw during development. Not too surprising, though. Have any of the Avatar franchise video game tie-ins been well-received? I don't think so.

Fixed that for you :P It's rare to find a franchise tie-in game that's at least decent, let alone actually a good solid game on its own.

Which really sucks, because in the hands of a capable game dev team and a deadline that isn't rushed to try and line up with a premiere date or whatever, the Avatarverse work work wonderfully in video game form. Whether as some sort of fighting game, or action-adventure or action-RPG, or hell, a pro-bending sports game. Hell, video games could be an awesome storytelling tool to explore other time periods in the setting and the adventures of previous Avatars. I mean, we've got a full 10,000 years between Wan and Korra, I doubt the events in the TV series are the only interesting things that have happened in that span! :P

Pokemon video games are good. and frankly, I would love to see an Avatar game that explored the history of other Avatars. Or, better yet, an online Avatar MMORPG! you could start by choosing your element and stuff. and it could be similar to Elder Scrolls Online in that it explores history and lore of the Avatar Universe. It would be a great way to continue the franchise, even after the end of its TV era.

Thing is, the Pokemon games came first, the TV show/comics/movies/etc were based on the game, not vice versa. :P

Not sure how well an MMO would work though; there's a certain inherent imbalance in the system itself. For instance, not all players picking earthbending are going to be able to take the metalbending perks (or, while we're at it, the lavabending!) and similar goes for the upper-tier skills in the other bending disciplines. Game balancing while keeping remotely in the ballpark of canon would be a pretty tricky balancing act. It could work, but I think the setting lends itself to more narrative genres than MMOs can usually offer.
