My research indicates it has to do with Nielsen test watchers. Basically, people sign up and log their watching habits, and Nielsen then uses the watching habits of those viewers to estimate the total number of viewers everywhere.

Yes, it worked brilliant in the 50s, but now it's irrelevant. Stuff like the internet and Netflix make TV obsolete.

There's nothing I can see that indicates that Nick is thrilled with this either. From what (admittedly little) I've seen looking into this Nick got shafted by the leaks and they've been trying to run damage control since. That doesn't always work out as well as people like, but blaming Nick for it, especially with such a level of vitriol, is probably not needed. Especially since without Nick we might not have gotten ATLA or LOK at all. Ever.

There's no way that some Spanish language leak is responsible for the low ratings, it's Nick's fault. If they had any decency at all they'd have kept airing the show until the end, regardless of the ratings, until the contract was over, as was expected of them.

Indeed! Fine people like my sis and her hubby, who didn't even realize that their cable TV had been out for upwards of a week because they always watch stuff on TV like people did in the good ol' days! (They decided if their TV service could be out for days without being missed, that maybe it was time to cut the cable and instead get a better internet connection!)

Honestly, LoK could have achieved that if the scheduling was better. Nick never seemed interested in marketing the franchise (both TLA and LoK), but that ratings could have been excellent if Nick publicized the series more and gave it a better time slot. That's just my two-cents.

(Granted, the way the final season of that went without Marmel writing for the show anymore, it was probably a mercy kill, but still...)

Man, and nevermind kiddie toys; given the show's appeal to a wider audience, they could easily make some good cash on high-end collectibles and tshirts and the like. Hell, if they got one of the anime figure companies in on it, I'd gladly pay into the triple-digits for some nice figures just like I do for some of my anime and video game collectibles.

Like I and others have said, all Nick sees is high upfront cost for Korra to hire the great writers and artists. From Nick's point of view, not only is Spongebob easier to make in terms of writing, and Spongebob is more in line with Nick's kid-friendly image, but Spongebob is also for younger kids who buy more toys, as opposed to Korra's older audience who are less likely to buy toys. I've heard the issue of merchandising and toys is a big reason Pixar's Cars (which had toys that were hugely popular) got sequels and spin-offs, but I digress.

Bionicles was all about flaming swords and shooting ice spikes. Nobody cared about any of that elemental crap. Everybody wanted the fire Toa, or the ice Toa, or the rock Toa. They were the coolest, because they had flaming and frozen swords, and could smash mountains in half.
