1. The Burmese Harp (WW2, Japanese perspective)
2. The General (American Civil War)
3. Dr Strangelove (Cold War)
4. Dead Man (War on American Indians)
5. Kagemusha (Japanese warring states period)
6. The Thin Red Line (WW2, to some extent an American remake of Burmese Harp, but a good one)
7. Das Boot (WW2, German perspective)
8. Le Grande Illusion (WW1, French perspective)
9. Hiroshima Mon Amour (French / Japanese co-production)
10. Barefoot Gen (WW2, anime)

Has anyone who is NOT from the US put Saving Private Ryan in their top 10?

Great list. I forgot about Kagemusha and Hiroshima mom amour, two great masterpieces.

I would like to add that although it is an animated movie, Hotaru no Haka, (The Grave of the Fireflies), is one of the most touching war movies ever. A war movie not about soldiers, bullets, explosions, but about suffering and pain nevertheless.

Good list. Haven't heard of Taegukgi before. Sounds quite good.

I would definitely recommend Taugukgi. Its about the Korean war from the point of view of the South Koreans and it has some huge battles and a pretty good storyline aswell. I'd maybe though swap Stalingrad with Black Hawk Down (Stalingrad had a bit of action but it didn't really seem as epic as it was made to be, I suppose I may have to watch it again though) and then I'd replace BHD with Porkchop Hill, another Korean war film and a brilliant one at that.

that reminds me of another one I missed. a story of a vet trying to fit back into the civilian world after experiencing the horrors of the Vietnam war.

My friend showed me this when he got back from Japan decades ago... now I can't find it anywhere... :(

Excellent film, is Graveyard of the Fireflies. It's based on a semi-autobiographical book, and is frankly brilliant as such. A lot of people will ignore it as it is animated, but then some people think Braveheart is a good film.

Grave of the Fireflies is a great film. I'd be surprised if you had trouble finding it.

I prefer Barefoot Gen but that may be personal preference.

The Bridge segment in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with its permanently drunk captain (Best character in the film) IMHO beats most 'Real' war films.

Not all of them, but most.
