What if I put my own name in it? What's it mean then? I've seen people do that granted it has been some time since I've seen it used that way.

It's also a weird coincidence that I only just found out about this echo thing yesterday whilst inadvertently delving into some far right websites out of curiosity, and now is the first time I've seen it on NS.
Is there some sort of increase of far-right stuff going on recently, be it more people doing this stuff, or a more vocal/louder minority?

I missed the AOL era, I was an ICQ and IRC newbie, we used *hugs* and /me instead. Another half-serious suggestion to float out of the lair is weaponizing the word filter to turn (((THIS))) into ♥︎♥︎♥︎THIS♥︎♥︎♥︎. Which made me laugh way too much and get some weird looks at work. :P

I only use the Storm*** meme in the name of comedy, so this doesn't affect me. Honestly, I always thought the (((ECHO))) was hilarious, especially since I came close to having it used on me for my pro-Jewry/Israel works on the Tumblr site.

Anyone who thinks Trump and Brexit are representations of vicious extremism akin to the Nazis, and to white supremacy, is a bona fide idiot. (Note, I am not insinuating that Gauthier believes this.)

Trump is not exclusively the "white man's candidate". There are plenty of minorities on board with him. If Romney and McCain are bellwhethers to go by, Trump will get between a quarter and a third of the lawful Hispanic vote.

I honestly do not understand why the (((ECHO))) label, how did it come to be? Why is it so uncreative? And why is it representative to the right?!

Here's the history. Short answer: Editors of a far-right site started to use it to show that the actions of certain famous people with Jewish heritage "echoed throughout history", and it caught on with the alt-right crowd.

Personally I think banning it is silly, since it was so quickly hijacked by people using it mockingly (as well as using it to just mock the alt-right) that it's lost most/all of its bite.

Have to wonder if alt-righters and neoNazis will carry this on in real life and we have people trying to physically echo names they assume are Jewish.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

If anything, letting them echo makes it easier to identify who's alt-right or neoNazi. Besides if it's banned they'll just invent a new way to scream "JOOOOOOOOO" online.

It's an annoying occurrence, but honestly not enough to be labeled harassment in my opinion. Though it really depends on the situation.

I personally wouldn't ban this outright, though it can get quite annoying. I'd go with Kat and say context first, parentheses second.

I don't get it...

By that I mean, sure it's apparently neo-nazi symbolism, but why tho.

Because I'm sure a lot of people don't know that it's apparently neo-nazi so what if someone uses it out of that context?

They already said context will be taken into consideration, moderation did.

To be honest, it's a perfectly valid compromise, given the variety of users who use it.
