Hi,

Just wanted to check this with you before I go and do it. If I had a character in an rp raped, but stopped the actual roleplaying after one forced the other onto the floor/a bed and only spoke about it the next day, would this brake the pg-13 rule?

While you shouldn't let your creativity be impeded, I would encourage you to think about some other alternatives that you might be able to use in your post. Is the rape really needed? Why do you want one character to rape the other?

Do you really need it, or can you just skip the entire thing?


As a sidenote, sex and other non PG-13 events tend to be handled the way you describe: not actually RP'ed, but usually implied with a subtle *screen fades to black* or something like that.

That said, rape is a fairly sensitive topic and even reading it in a Roleplay might upset others, so the Mods would be best to weigh in on the legality of the entire post.

In case they allow it, use the appropriate trigger warning at the start of your post and put it inside a pair of spoiler tags so people can skip if they want to.

RP that's not past PG-13 is not usually moderated. If the content of the story isn't beyond PG-13 parameters then its allowed. So just don't go into extremely descriptive scenes and settle for a more abstract description of the act, you'll be fine.

Definitely fade to black and leave the details out. Imply everything. The aftermath could be roleplayed if done respectfully and with courtesy to real life survivors (being mindful the whole time of our PG13 limit).

Remember, we allow other sensitive topics to be roleplayed. This is one of those topics. If handled carefully with due respect, there is no reason why it can't be implied and the fade to black.

To add to this - I've handled it in one of my own RP's. We alluded to it, we did not write out the scene, we did cut to another part of the story and skip ahead, and did not bemoan all the uncomfortable details. And yes, there was a point to it, not just tossed in as added 'fluff' or for attention.

As others have said, think on what it is you're writing, and why you're writing it. If it's something /too/ adult for the site, perhaps this isn't where you ought to be writing. If it is an adult theme, but you /can/ tone it down, is it needed? If it is needed, and you can write it appropriately, it doesn't hurt to take extra precautions and be sure you don't get into any gritty details that will get you into trouble. If you search through this forum, we have dozens of threads I'll bet with questions like this, and answers in much the same vein, with even solutions and suggestions for troublesome spots that have been posted in an attempt to help out.

If you are unfamiliar with a subject, if it makes you uncomfortable, and you are unsure of your ability to handle it properly? Do yourself a favor, and don't write it. It will be awkward, it will run the risk of crossing lines, it may come back to haunt you later in your NS career, and 8/10 times ... it isn't as needed as some think it might be at the time.

Never tackled a rape scene in any of my RPs, but though some sexual abuse was hinted at in what used to be widely known as "the torture post" and "tapdancing riiiiiight at the absolute uppermost limit for the forums."

My best suggestion, aside from the "fade to black" and so on, is that implication is your best friend. You can imply so many horrific things with minimal detail and description; and in a lot of ways that can make atrocities even worse to the reader, since they are left to fill in the details themselves.
