[closed] can you TG mods

Postby Dibeg » Thu Jun 18, 2015 5:18 pm

can you TG mods, how effective is this, and will they hate you afterwards? pretty simple question, but just to be clear, I am talking about TGing questions that you don't fit in a GHR nor are proper to be posted on this forum.

You can, it's effective, and no. They'll either answer it, or send you to where it can be answered, as in another mod or a forum that's already answered it.

I'd make that a last resort. I'm sure none of the mods feel like being bombarded by TGs.

Yes, however please note the following:

1. It's up to the individual Mod if they respond. Most of us do, but not always.
2. Anything that is a Moderation issue CANNOT be handled vis TGs. this is for your safety. We want a record trail so that other Mods and Admin can check if need be.

In other words, if you're just asking us about the game or ourselves, or just a question about where something goes, not a worry. If it's to report something, appeal, or something like that, we'll have to kick it right back out, sorry.

For the record, most things "fit in a GHR." If you have a general question about the game, the forum might be a better place to post thing but telegramming me and hoping that I'm online and checking my TGs is hit or miss. (I rarely read TGs when I'm on my phone, so even though I just "logged in," I may not read my TGs and may not reply for a day or two, depending on my work schedule.) The GHR is viewable by all Game Mods, so there's a wider pool of possible contacts to respond to you, rather than just picking a mod that you hope will respond ... eventually.

I'm one of the ones not remotely interested in telegrams to my nation. If you TG me, you might get a terse reply pointing you to this forum or Getting Help. More likely, I'll simply ignore it or even block you if you are rude.

We have a public venue (here) and a private venue (GHR). There is no need for private TGs on moderation matters. I reserve my TG mailbox for people I choose to talk to.

As Nerv notes, we each respond differently, but I'll usually reply to TGs asking me about NS Sports RP or about discussion points relating to debates in General I'm actively participating in.

TGs about moderation issues will simply get a reply directing the individual to a Getting Help Request or this forum, with a brief polite note stating that we don't moderate via TG.

And I totally ignore 500-word rants about the failures of the moderation system.

Frighteningly enough, so long as you aren't trying to sneak something through moderation-wise, and so long as you don't act like a jerk, I don't mind telegrams. I've had players attempt, begging forgiveness before even asking whatever question they were hoping to, and being shocked - yes, shocked - that I responded, let alone without threatening to next delete them, their best friend, their cousin, their dog, and the one possibly belonging to their favorite teacher from 5th grade out of simple spite.

Seriously. I've heard some doozies. For the record, despite evidence to the contrary, I am human. I can even on occasion, be humane.
Like the others have said - it's hit and miss, depends on personal preference, your approach, and whether or not it's Moderation (which does not ever belong in our TG boxes in any case) or something else. No, I am not interested in any shenanigans. Yes, I am probably older than your parents and if not older, damn close enough that it ought to make you cringe for having even briefly entertained any salacious thoughts, you naughty naughty monkeys. (Yes, I've dealt with that too. Shock. Awe. Cringe.) And yes, in spite of all of that 'old fart' business, I still play video games (zomg Fallout 4 Pip-boy edition, I am SO ready!), love metal, old and newer rock, sci-fi, fantasy, action and horror flicks, and will happily armor up to meet a challenge to my honor on the field of battle. That is, if you also have the proper armor. Like I do. So long as my joints don't give out on me anyways. Ahem.

So don't do it. It will only end in tears, and they will not be mine.

tl;dr - Good rule of thumb, as always - when in doubt? Don't.

As others have already said and repeated, I will not entertain Moderation matters via telegram- the stock response to those is a boilerplate pointing to the moderation forum or the Getting Help page with a reminder that modstuff does not go through TG. The most common variety of those I tend to get are people trying to appeal a mod decision I made, in which case they get a variation on the boilerplate that appeals go to the appropriate location, where one of my colleagues will review it.

For casual conversation, general game-related questions, and the occasional clarification though, (usually from people indirectly involved just wanting to better understand why X, Y, and Z were actionable, NOT those involved trying to wheedle or appeal it,) I'm pretty open. I think the bulk of TGs I get that aren't directly moderation-related are people asking me where I got my mod sig pics/did I make those myself; which usually turns into a crash-course on how to use the DoGA 3-D software. :lol2: I've had chats with folks about anime (and anime conventions!), video games, creative writing, even done a couple of interviews for class projects and NS-related stuff.

I do respond to telegrams, provided that: a) it's not about a Moderator decision (including GA Ruling appeals); b) to complain about site rules, policy, and/or another mod; c) it's civil; d) request for a legality ruling; and e) anything that is handle either through GHR or Moderation. If it's any of the above, the most I do is a courtesy response directing the person elsewhere. That said, I will respond to general queries, comments, concerns (I'm a Game of Thrones fan); and for WA players, I will answer proposal related questions that aren't in violation of point "d" to the best of my ability. If you want to talk games, I do play a few steam games (damn summer sale)... 8)

They get too many engagement proposals and need to focus on reports in Moderation.

1. This belongs in Moderation, not General.
2. If they let us TG mods, mod inboxes would literally be overflowing with frivolous bullshit, drowning out non-frivolous bullshit.
3. If you really need to get a mods attention that fucking badly, either post about the problem in Moderation, or send a GHR, instead of pointlessly and impotently bitching about how you can't spam their inboxes.

EDIT: Huh, this apparently got moved to Moderation. Nice ninja, mods.

I should also note that if you have to question the need for mods, you have either never been on the internet before today, or you're just looking to troll and get away with it.

1. Perhaps you should've chosen a different question to rhetorically ask.

2. Uhhh, GHRs are private.

3. "Conformist snark". Considering I've a well-documented history of critcizing Moderation, that's hardly a label which applies to me.

4. If you can think of a way to do it that doesn't suffer from the problem I mentioned, while still being subject to the same recordskeeping all moderator actions are, then I, at least, would be all ears.
