[report] Threadjacking in the feminism thread

Nyoronet and Nierra have been threadjacking the feminist thread with anti-feminist rants. Other posters have pointed out that they should make their own threads for this since the OP clearly states that the feminism thread isn't the place for it, but they have not done so.

I don't think it started here, but it's been going on for a while and there seems to be as good a start as any.

As a quick rebuttal I think any thread about any topic deserves to have people there who can comment and add freely their own opinions about the subject matter the way an open forum such as NSG allows us to do. To be against that, I think, is to be against the idea of general posting that is supposed to encourage high minded debate and instead of doing that we become more entangled in our personal political bubbles that I think NSG is supposed to be against.

I'm not profeminism or antifeminist, I am a simple person who wants the rules to be followed so everyone can enjoy themselves. If I made a thread specifically to promote traditional values could I simply just say liberals should not post their opinions here? I think we should regulate the speech to ensure it is not flaming, and if anything there was remotely connected to flaming I apologize, but in a thread about feminism the critiques of it in a very realistic way that it operates should be allowed to be shared.

This is NSG, not the blog sphere it's supposed to be to abolish political bubbles not encourage them.

That's my take on it at least.

Euro mentioned analyzing what the megathread should/shouldn't contain. Perhaps adding a few Mod-chosen caveats to the OP might help, if you all decide that the thread can proceed?

I don't want to stifle anyone's right to speak their mind but it would be lovely if we had a place to go where we can discuss (within the parameters of our own movement) equality and our beliefs on how to best support/obtain it. People outside of our movement (and all its flavors) are welcome to post but, because we are discussing in-house things, negative views about the entire movement itself are not welcome.

This concept is employed successfully in the Christian thread. A Baptist and a Mormon are permitted to disagree over doctrine there, and atheists and people of other faiths can post, provided all remain respectful of the overarching topic and the people whom embrace it.

It may be helpful to note that the one who was doing most of the threadjacking has already been deleted for some unknown (to me) offense anyway. Since nations don't usually get deleted so swiftly without cause I assume he was simply here to cause trouble?

Why let the only active, well written thread on feminism die just because of a threadjacker who has already been taken care of for some other reason?

It's still being discussed. As always, we have a large team that crosses a lot of timezones, and there are invariably opposing or differing arguments that get brought to the table - especially when a ruling can be seen as setting any sort of potential precedent. The team is just trying to look at all the pros and cons, and come to an agreement on how to go forward. Thanks for the continued patience, folks.

Two significant policy questions were embedded in the threadjacking report. As such, these questions needed the input and discussion of the entire NationStates Moderation Team. After significant deliberation, we are now ready to hand down our ruling.

The first question, which is a more general one, involves the limiting of a (group) thread to ONLY certain participants or points of view. It's our ruling that NSG threads cannot do this. You cannot make a group thread for whatever topic and then limit it to strictly pro (or anti) side. NSG is a discussion forum, threads are open to allow discussion, even if you don't happen to like that discussion. Just because someone posts disagreeing with the general trend of the topic that is not prima facia evidence of trolling. That said, there are (usually) obvious differences between one off posts of going into, say, the Christian thread and screaming "Christianity is STUPID!" and posting "I think Christianity is false, and here's why...". It might be anti-Christian, but it does allow the pro side to engage in discussion.

Indeed, if we may, we would like to point out that Swith Witherward's engagement of "The group of you seem very happy to tell each other what feminists do and do not believe. Perhaps it would be more prudent to ask us what we believe. You see, we're such a diverse group that we won't all agree, but at least you'll gain perspectives that run far deeper than your currently limited viewpoint." is exactly how we would like to see these threads work, kudos to her for that!

Going to the second question, was it trolling and/or threadjacking to post something anti-feminist? No. Using the above, we find that some of the posters in question, while posting an anti-spiel, stuck around to debate and argue. They engaged, which tells us that this is what should be happening in NSG's threads. It should be noted however that one involved player turned out to be Delete-On-Sight and so was dealt with on those grounds.
