[question] regarding Mod Impersonation

Postby Cornupication » Sun Nov 23, 2014 5:55 pm

I'm aware that impersonating a moderator is an actionable offense by use of the red warn text. My question is - does that rule extend to forum signatures as well as forum posts?

I'm asking, because of the forum signature of [urlhttp://forum.nationstates.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=615693]this[/url] user.

He's not actually using the warn code itself, and in the context of the sig in question, it's pretty clear he's making a joke about himself, rather than anything actually trying to pose as anything official.

*** White, bold text on a red background, even with the asterisks *** isn't against the rules; that only crosses into mod impersonation if the contents are trying to pose as a mod as well. The actual *** warn code *** is specifically designed so that it is impossible to completely imitate using any combination of other BBcodes, since the warn code adds that black box around it, as well as changing the display font- outside of the warn code, there is no other way to make that border (table tags don't display the same way, so you can't use a table to get the same outline effect,) or to change the display font.

But yeah, the actual warn tag itself is still prohibited in sigs, too.

Going from the context and lack of any official mod action taken or noted, just a caution against taking it too far.

I'm lucky to only have gotten away with a small burn - Fris has a tendency to use flammenwerfers on me :(

Moral of the Story: Don't use text emulating mod warn tags

Just checking, since I'm not seeing an answer for his question in here anywhere. This looks a lot more like the actual code, is this not allowed?

And I'm sure Fris is a volunteer who has to deal with tons of crap in here everyday, leading to a few snarky words and overreactions to things now and then. Maybe Fris could use a bubble-bath, a nice glass of red, and a night off? :P

My signature writes it clear and boldly that you can be a abrasive asshole :p

Though it does allow for a non-moderator response, it could allow for a moderation impersonation given the context, right?

Missed your post.

Yes, it was using the actual code. It was reported in the Sigs megathread, and had already been removed) and *** warned *** by the time I got to this thread.

I'd be happier if certain DOS players weren't so adamant about showing their ass every night or two. Not a fan of bubble baths, either.

(at the risk of getting warned for chatting :P)

Hey, we try to report them quickly (if I may pop a quick question in off-topic, what drop down menu item is best? Report a spammer? WA cheater? Other?) ;) It's not like anyone I know of is asking for it.

Any they're not for everyone :P It was meant in more of a metaphorical sense, anyways.... Could say a gourmet cream soda and a good book, or whatever does happen to suit your fancy 8)

I don't know why we still have the drop list. It's entirely irrelevant. Everything goes into one big bin.

And it only covers a small handful of things too! I rarely file A GHR without wondering what the fudge to tag it as... :P I wondered if it just gave it some kind of a heading for you to look at, but figured a properly filled in custom field would be more productive if so, and a poor one not much worse then just..."other" :P

Guess I won;t worry about it so much in future, until such time as it's revamped :P

I guess I should leave this admitted threadjack well enough alone now. Thanks for the info, and have a good night/day/morning/evening!

just seeing that the color=#FFFFFF is the sign for the mod code, how would it be impossible to impersonate ?

Why are some moderators blue and some red and some light green ?

Administrators are purple: memberlist.php?mode=group&g=5

Global Moderators are red: memberlist.php?mode=group&g=4

Roleplay Mentors are green but they are not apart of the Moderation team: memberlist.php?mode=group&g=12

Senior Mods are Blue: memberlist.php?mode=group&g=8

There's some cross-over but that is self explanatory.

If you go to the very bottom of the Forums
There's a bunch of names that'll say ''Registered Users'' - these are people who have been online in like the last few minutes IIRC. Below that chunk of names is a ''Legend'' which shows the teams. Click on those and it brings up who's apart of what.

In regards to the Moderation Warning Tags used - you could attempt to impersonate it using a red background and white-lettering - but there's still a stark difference between the two. Moderation Tags are thicker, have a black outline, and a bit larger and bold text. (See above)

It's not. I've marked up Reppy's message to show the actual code involved: to get exactly effect of
Code: Select all
[warn][/warn]
, you need to use that tag. And then the moderators will spank you. ;)

Strange, it doesn't for me. In at least three different devices (Linux/iceweasel, Windows/firefox, Android/Chrome).
