Images permanently shrunken across the internet by NS?

Postby Red-China » Mon Jun 27, 2016 3:07 pm

This is a problem I've noticed on several different accounts. If I put a large picture in my factbook, it usually ends up being shrunken and decreased in quality. When I try to find the same image again, It will say that it has high resolution (IE 1920x1080) but its quality at that size is absolute trash, and it was fine beforehand. I'm pretty concerned about this as this might end up causing problems for other websites, as well as our own.

Please address this.

AAand I don't use NS stats because it would take an extremely annoying amount of issues and time to make my nation even somewhat accurate.

You shouldn't put images too large to fit on a screen in your factbook, or anywhere else.

It's not too large to fit on a screen. The factbook automatically displays something as smaller than it actually is if its width is greater than that of the factbook itself.

And, in my experience, it's done the whole shrinking/bad quality thing with pictures that aren't really that big.

i dont think NS is permanently shrinking images on other websites

I investigated it myself, and the images are the same on both sites.

It is better to shrink the image in a proper image-editting program, save that, and link to the shrunken version. Dedicated image-editing programs generally have better-quality scaling algorithms than web browsers, and it also saves bandwidth and memory.

Okay.

That doesn't address the issue at hand.

Please explain the issue at hand, then.

Do you want:
(A) Ridiculously large images that break the screen? (I told you you shouldn't.)
(B) Smaller images that look ugly due to low-quality scaling? (In that case there's no problem, you're getting that already.)
(C) Smaller images that still look good? (I told you how to do that.)
(D) Something else? (Explain.)

What image host are you using? I suspect they may be the culprit here.

Also, Nationstates can not cause an image to display differently on another website. We literally cannot change the files on some other website to change their images. That sounds like some sort of caching issue in your browser, easily fixed by clearing your cache and/or hard-refreshing the other website and making your browser load the actual image from the website instead of the decreased-quality one in your cache.

This is correct, and Trott has correctly explained why. Large images are scaled down by the browser if they would otherwise require people to scroll horizontally to see them. The same thing happens in the forums.
