"Font" tags for the Forum

Postby Cnoctir » Tue Dec 22, 2015 3:12 pm

I apologise if this has already been discussed, but I was wondering if, some time in the future, the [font] tags could be implemented to the forum. I think they could be very useful for making authentic-looking messages in RPs, by using a typewriter-style font for messages and a calligraphy-style font for signatures. Is this in development currently, or is there some reason that this could not be done?

You can use the [pre] tag, which does have a nice effect of changing your font to Courier.

Depends on what fonts would be available, because I think some would be bothered by Comic Sans.

There's the Garish posts rule: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=260044#007

Though I'm not in favour of a blanket ban of comic sans. It has its uses.

If this is done in the same way as the dispatches version, then I'm all for it. You should be aware that the font tag will use the font on your system, it does not actually alter the text in any way. If another user does not have that font and surprisingly different operating systems don't share a number of fonts. It is debatable whether you have access to Verdana, Garamond, Palatino, Tahoma amongst various others depending on your OS. It is considered bad practice in web-design to use fonts that other users cannot see, hence the idea of Web-safe fonts (there is no such thing, but it is the idea of appealing to "most" that counts). The primary way of combating this is to use font-families and fall-back fonts so that if the font isn't available there's a second and third font that's possible. A little like a preferential voting system.

Bedetopia has the preferred solution for "typewriter-style" but as for calligraphy, there are not many calligraphy-style fonts that are common between systems even if they have the same operating system. You run the risk of you seeing the calligraphy and everyone else seeing "arial" or worse "new times roman". (I don't have access to arial ._.)

When we first set up this forum, I asked the boss about doing this, and the answer I got was a pretty unambiguous "No." =/

Did Almighty Overlord Max give any reasoning?

Because people already overuse the colors and size and bold tags, making much of what they write unreadable?

Page composition works better when everyone is using the same, easily readable font. If we make changes, they're forumwide, so we can't just let people use decorative fonts in the RP forums.

Do what others do with signatures and headers and proclamations - create them offline in your choice of programs, save as an image, and post the image.

2 things to keep in mind (that you might already know).

1) Your browser would probably let you change the default font for the browser pages. I very much prefer Verdana over TImes New Roman or Arial or whatever the standard default is. So I've changed my browser settings accordingly.

2) If it's an artistic component (i.e. header or something), you could create an image on your computer (MS Paint, etc.) and then upload to a free image host so you can have the header display as you choose. (I do this more for dispatches than forum pages, but it's still an option.)

One thing to keep in mind there is that some players use the Dark Theme, so keep that in mind when selecting a font color so that it's easily viewable on the two major themes.
