Possible Trojan with FlagMaker

Postby Alaizia » Tue Oct 27, 2015 12:46 pm

So I decided to design my own flag and I happened to see this dispatch. After scrolling down and seeing the recommended FlagMaker 1.7 I decided to download it. All went fine until my anti-virus informed me of a Trojan virus in the downloaded file. So I followed the recommendation and i removed it.
Has anyone downloaded this program and had the same issue? Should I download it or not after all? It is supposed to be recommended.

Thanks.

I can't speak for the safety of the program, and while it is probably a false-positive, the factbook is nearly 2 years old, so who knows anymore.
In any case, I suggest using Paint.net to create your flags.

It's basically MSPaint with a million-and-one more features, and simple enough to use without any experience, it's what I use to make my Flags. Careful with the Website though, lots of 'DOWNLOAD NOW' ads, so it looks shady as hell, but the program is perfectly safe.

On the other hand, consider GIMP, it's a bit technical for my tastes, but if you need to do something that PDN just can't do, it is nice to have around.

On another note, Technical is probably not the place to report such a thing, it is a User-Created Factbook, with an unofficial program, the Mods don't really have any power over it.

Mods/Admins can decide whether we allow linking to it or not.

In this case, my own virus checker finds no problem with it. Which anti-virus are you using?

My scans didn't and still don't show anything suspect about the file, either, and I've been using it for a couple years without any issues.

It's a very useful little flag-making tool from one of the members of the flag-focused subreddit /r/vexillology.

I've been using it for ages with no issue whatsoever. It's also a great flag maker!

The USA was in NATO when the American Civil War happened, but the Confederacy coup didn't cause it to be kicked out, did it?

As the one who recommended it, I did not have any issue with it. I personally tested everything on the dispatch, but I am by no means a technical expert.

That being said, if there are any concerns or problems with any of utilities on the dispatch, please let me know. I don't want to suggest people use anything that may harm their computer or diminish in any way their NS experience.

I understand that the mods can't really have any responsibility with programs outside of the game, but because the dispatch seemed very organised and helpful I thought that maybe NS is somewhat aware of and could have a word about that.

By the way, I am using 360 Total Security anti-virus which is one of the best I had so far.

Thanks Tinfect for your recommendation I will look it up.

We take it seriously, don't worry.

What we're mostly looking for is verification whether or not it contains a trojan. If it has, we'll remove the link. We'll ask an admin to give a list of names of the people who voted the dispatch (if this is is available). We can then proceed to TG those people as well.
The Blaatschapen should resign
