[Resolved] Flag resolution on mobile version

Postby Benum Landum II » Wed Sep 02, 2015 8:49 am

I have observed that when I access NationStates on mobile with my cellular data connection, the nations' flags are displayed with a lower resolution than when I access the site using wi-fi. Is this an intended feature, to optimize speed when using a slow connection? And is there a way to force-display the higher resolution? (because my data connection is fast enough) I can provide screenshots if needed.

Thanks!

From experience with mobile devices, it's your device, not the site, and there is nothing you can do about it. To (badly) recall what I read on a webpage when looking this up for myself; "Your device may have the same pixel resolution as your laptop/PC, but it's pixels/inch or pixels/cm will be higher, meaning it's crammed into a smaller space. It works well with borders etc. where it is told 'draw this', but not pictures, where it is told, 'display this'."
That probably has some major mis-interpretations in it, which were amplified by the fact that my memory of it is a few months old, but I'm 99% it's the device, not the webpage.
I'm not going to keep your flag hosted on the internet forever, please save it to your computer or upload it elsewhere.

Yep. My computer is not part of the equation.

What I am talking about is when I am viewing NS on my phone, the resolution of nation flags varies, depending on whether I am using wi-fi or 3G. When I am using wi-fi, the nation flags appear clear. But when I am using 3G (same device), they appear pixelated/blurry. Is there a way to force "high-quality mode" even when using 3G? Thanks!

Edit: Here are some screenshots, using your nation page as a test.

Using 3G, you can see that the globe on the red part of the flag is not as well defined.

Edit 2: The firmware I have on my phone is Android 4.1.2 and the browser I am using is the AOSP (stock) browser.

I'm pretty sure that you misunderstood British Accia. They were not saying your computer was involved here. They were saying that your issue is probably caused by your device, and not something that NS does. That may or may not be true, but it's what they said.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Allow me to try and explain.
Most Mobile providers automatically have images reduced in resolution to prevent charging obscene amounts of money over things like webpage advertisements, or images.
On Wi-Fi, this is obviously not an issue, so they are displayed at full.

Yes, as per the above, we don't reduce the resolution of flags and banners for mobile, but some browsers and ISPs do.

It would be fairly difficult for us to tell whether you were coming in via wi-fi or 3G. Mobile theme is mobile theme, as far as we're concerned.
