Dissent is treason

Postby American Imperial Union » Tue Sep 01, 2015 1:26 am

Maybe this has been noticed before and everyone is cool with it.

But am I the only one amused that two buildings from the auschwitz birkenau complex is the banner for "dissent is treason?"

Maybe my identification is totally off but it looks like it.

That certainly would put a dark spin on things.
Carl Sagan, astrophysicist and atheist wrote:"Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.

The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both."

I believe the building pictured on the left is a torture room. I also believe that the basement of that particular building was boarded up, so they could do experiments with various gases before the gas chambers were built.

At least that was the impression from the documentary I watched.

That's making it even worse, actually.

Hey guys... I just thought I would pop in before a mod does and say this is the technical forum. This forum is used for site issues. It might be better to start a thread in General or ask the moderation team to move your thread to General.

Good luck!

Maybe. But I thought If I brought it to their attention they might fix it. If they see it as a problem.

Just kind of funny you can't use a swastika but images if auschwitz are totally kosher. I mean, what symbolizes genocide more? The swastika or a picture of auschwitz?

A swastika. I would not have recognized that picture as a picture from Auschwitz. There are many people who have not seen pictures of the actual concentration camps, but just about everyone in the US (and beyond) recognizes the Nazi swastika.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Definitely not General. Technical is the best place for it because I assume the OP wants the image changed which requires an Admin.

Yeah, it looks like Auschwitz to me. Just to echo Phydios, the average user probably isn't going to immediately recognize that as Auschwitz. They'd just think it was a jail/prison of some sort.

The swastika rule is established because a) it is immediately recognizable with malicious connotations and b) we get more Nazi spammers/trolls than anything else. 99.99% of the time, if someone is using a swastika in their flag, it's because they want a reaction.

So if you ask which one symbolizes genocide more? To the average user, the swastika is going to conjure up images of the Holocaust and genocide more than a picture of Auschwitz's interior.

Huh I figured they wanted to talk about the image. I am clearly missing context here... Thanks Luna.

It was a pretty good touch, why would you want it removed?

Maybe because using Auschwitz to represent silly in-game actions is a bit much? I agree with the OP; any generic oppressive-looking prison would have been fine, but Auschwitz is a little over-the-top.

I'm not sure how the banner licensing was handled, I know [v] mentioned the site purchased them from shutterstock, but it's possible they didn't know it was Auschwitz. The image can come up under the keywords 'prison' and 'camp'. So that fact may have been overlooked.

Or they decided it represented the banner the best. People do run horrific dictatorships in this game.

Well, auschwitz wasnt just a prison or camp. It was a death camp. Infact 1.1 million people were gassed and burned there. Because they were political dissidents, gay or of course, Jewish.

You missed my point. I'm aware of what Auschwitz was.

The banners were all purchased from Shutterstock. Two of the (many) tags Shutterstock uses for that picture are 'prison' and 'camp'. So it is possible that the picture was purchased without realizing it was Auschwitz.

Any chance it will be changed, then?

Not at all. There were two major ways that conversation could have gone:
1) (least likely) [v] was fully aware it was Auschwitz and wants to keep it
2) [v] did not know it was Auschwitz and, being the reasonable person she is, opts to change it

It's not the end of the world if we don't have it as a game banner.

Oh, I know. I'm not making a big deal about it. It's just that the change seems pointless to me.
