[Suggestion] Absolute timestamps for telegrams

Postby Phydios » Thu Jul 23, 2015 8:10 am

I feel like I'm missing something, because I see no way to get the exact time and date of a telegram. The timestamp is always relative: "6 hours ago", "3 days ago", "208 days ago", etc. I know the game logs the exact time and date of a telegram's arrival, or it couldn't give the relative timestamps, but those timestamps are not that helpful in finding out exactly when a telegram was sent. Something like "Thu, Jul 23, 2015 10:06 am" would be much better. Even if the format was different than that example, absolute timestamps would be much better than the current relative ones. The relative ones do have their uses, though...so maybe you could tap the relative timestamp to reveal the absolute one?

You can now hover over most dates & times in the game to display it in your local time.

Awesome! It looks great! Was I missing this somehow, or did you just add it? Either way, could you add similar functionality for the mobile site as well? I use both desktop and mobile regularly.

I'm not sure how to do that, since there's no hover on mobile, and timestamps already do something when you click/tap them (show an individual message, usually). Got any ideas?

What about
Code: Select all
245 days ago/ Thu Jul 23, 2015 10:24 pm

Kind of like a side by side.

The side by side format seems to be best. I like the format:
Code: Select all
7/23/2015, 7:07:23 PM (3 hours ago)

That would cause a lot of confusion between MM/DD/YY and DD/MM/YY.

Yes, that particular format is bad, but there are others, such as
Code: Select all
July 23, 2015, 7:07:23 PM (3 hours ago)

Or whatever it currently shows when people hover over the relative times.

That format is confusing, but it's the one being used now. That's why I based my example off of it. Personally, I like the format I used in my first post. It's reasonably compact, while still being clear.

29-hour bump.

Techies aren't usually on over the weekend.

A bump is wholly unnecessary in Tech, so long as the thread is still on the first page. You might think this is the Most Important Thing Ever, but relax.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of, well, most of that. I'll keep that in mind.

Doubling the length of all timestamps in order to display the same information in two formats at once isn't really an option.

Ainin wrote:That would cause a lot of confusion between MM/DD/YY and DD/MM/YY.

It's actually presented in the user's local time format, assuming their browser is configured correctly. E.g. MM/DD/YY for USA and DD/MM/YY for UK.

Hm. Well, if there's no place that can be tapped to show the absolute time, and you don't like having it in plain sight, then I'm really not sure what else to do. I'd be fine with just cutting out the relative time altogether, but there must be a reason why it's there, so I don't have any other suggestions.

I would just use ISO 8601:2004 for any time/date matter.

How about something in telegramme preferences that ask whether you want it in 'X whatevers ago' or 'XX/XX/XXXX XX:XX:XX'?

To reduce confusion with MM/DD/YY for USA and DD/MM/YY for UK, how about:
27 July 2015, 14:14:54

British Accia wrote:How about something in telegramme preferences that ask whether you want it in 'X whatevers ago' or 'XX/XX/XXXX XX:XX:XX'?

I would support adding this setting as well (Check-box labelled "Show date and time instead of relative timestamps"). Retain relative timestamps as default for now to ease transition.

[Violet] already said that the game changes DD/MM/YY timestamps based on what your timezone location is in forum preferences.
