Images not working with certain browsers?

Postby Lydenburg » Wed Nov 26, 2014 7:14 pm

Hi,

I didn't know where else to post coding/HTML problems, so I thought I'd try Tech first.

I was recently reviewing my factbook on a mate's computer with a different browser (Firefox) and the banner on my main index page appears inexplicably tiny. As in, shrunk to a thumbnail that was barely visible. I was perplexed. The computer had another browser available (Chrome) so I tried looking at it in Chrome - same problem!

Now I use Netscape, and the factbook looks fine on my home PC. But the fact remains that nobody else on this site - at least, nobody that I know of - uses Netscape, while a significant percentage use either Firefox or Chrome. It bothers me that I may have done all that extensive coding on my factbook using an obsolete browser and thereby screwed it up for every one else.

Here's what it looks like on Chrome.

Here's what it looks like on Netscape.

Link to my factbook: http://www.nationstates.net/nation=lyde ... ok/id=main

See the difference? Any Chrome or Firefox users experiencing similar issues?

So is it an issue with my coding, a browser conflict, the browser settings, or both?

First, a quick reaction to:

Second, your screenshots are far too small to offer any useful data. (200px × 77px or 200px × 102px is way, way WAY too small to make out any information.)

Which leads me to third... I think the problem is your image host, not the browser or the code. In Firefox, the banner shows as 200px × 54px in size. Given that your screenshots are afflicted the same way, I suspect what's happening is wikia.com disallows hotlinking full-size images, and that's where the shrinking is coming from. Try uploading your images to an actual image hosting site such Photobucket or Imgur for use in your factbook instead of trying to link it straight from Wikia.

A few things:
1) Not sure what the wikia.com page is, but hotlinking can be dangerous, so you may want to use a free photo hosting site like Imgur or Photobucket.

2) The image itself is tiny - 200x54px per my browser details - and I have no idea why Netscape is stretching it wider than it actually is. (Basically, yes, Netscape is displaying things in a funky way that most browsers don't duplicate. I see what you show on your Chrome screencap, and I use Firefox.)

EDIT: When mods collide!

Thanks for the advice, Reploid (& Mouse). I appreciate it. All header images were uploaded to my imgur and the problem has been resolved.

Funny how Netscape was keeping me in the dark though.

It's not so much Netscape specifically. It's just that you have the larger images in your browser cache from when you visited the wikia page where you copied it from... If you had used Firefox it would still have shown the larger images in your Firefox, and it still would have shown the smaller images in your friend's Firefox...

If this is an actionable gravedig, let me know - but I wasn't sure and didn't really want to open another thread.

It was recommended that I shift my factbook images to imgur or some similar image hosting site to avoid the shrinkage which comes with hotlinking. However, I've now been informed that this phenomenon - "image compression" is also present on imgur and Photobucket as well. Apparently, these sites will inevitably compress all images once they've been uploaded for a while, thereby putting me back to square one.

Can somebody with the necessary expertise comment? I'm concerned that I'll go through all that work moving everything to imgur only to have the same problem again.

They do compress images...but not in the same way or for the same reasons. I've never had the experience you are talking about however and have yet to see any evidence of such a thing occuring.

The only time I have ever seen an image be compressed, is when it was too large. Some hosts if an image is not seen in a while remove them entirely.

So how do they in fact compress images?

Most image hosts quite explicitly state that they have size limits. If you give them something over that size limit. They will shrink it down until it fits.

Image hosts (in my experience) do not halve the images in size even though they fit the criteria just because they have been there for a while >.>
